Are you looking to spruce up your teenage daughter's bedroom without breaking the bank? It’s no secret that teen girls love all things modern and stylish. Fortunately, there are affordable and creative ways to help make any teen's bedroom look super chic.

Teenage Girl Bedroom Overhaul

This year for Christmas my husband and I thought it was a great idea to give our girls their own rooms. They had been sharing a room for three years. And let's be honest, I was tired of the mess and fighting.

Since we had the space so it was just a matter of getting rooms done.  When we started the project we didn't realize how much work these spaces needed. However, we stuck with it and ended up with a beautiful room design for each small space.

17 DIY Teenage Girl Bedroom Ideas

Try out some of these creative ideas to make her room really shine.

17 DIY Teenage Girl Bedroom Ideas

Wall Color

We wanted to have this space feel elegant, yet comfy and stylish for a teen bedroom. To start, we opted to paint it a neutral color instead of using a vibrant color scheme on the wall. Starting with a neutral base makes it easier to add wall accents or colored decor later on.

I used a soft white paint in both bedrooms. The wall color is Halo by Benjamin Moore and the moldings are White Dove by Benjamin Moore.

Wall Woodwork

When you use a neutral color on your wall, it is a good idea to use additional trim or wood work for some element of design. For this space we added a simple chair rail around the room to break up the monotony.

You can also use these other options:

  • Shiplap or faux shiplap
  • Shadow box molding
  • Wainscoting
  • Contemporary wood design

Accent Wallpaper

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to add an accent wall that my daughter would love. After looking at several floral wallpapers, I found this this design by Clairebella Studio's. This beautiful wallpaper is the perfect accent to go on her bedroom wall behind her bed. The bright colors added so much personality.

If you are thinking of installing wallpaper you can view my post of how we installed this wallpaper and a few tips too here. A large wall mural is also a fun option.

Headboard and Frame

I built this bed with some rough sawn wood that a family member found in the middle of a field. The texture and the real weathering are priceless on this type of wood. If you look closely you can see how it weathered unevenly based on where it was in the pile of wood.  It adds so much character and charm as a focal point! If you want to weather your own wood, see how you can do it here.

This platform bed was built using Shanty 2 Chic's twin platform bed plans and I figured out the measurements to make it a full bed for my teen's room.  Plans here

The bun feet on this platform bed provide aesthetic value that is perfect for this style of bed to really show off all the details!

Garland Decor

A chic way to add some extra style is by adding a garland to a headboard. A fun garland selection of pom poms and different colors brightens up the space and makes for fun decoration. Make your own here. You can also add a strand of fairy lights for some extra twinkling at night.

Bedding for Teen Girl's Room

One of the best things about redoing these rooms is the chance to update bedding for our girls. Their new zipper bedding is from Beddy's. See that darling ruffle? Underneath it is a zipper, so when you are ready for bed all you have to do is unzip the side and climb into bed. Making the bed in the morning is just as easy by zipping it back up.

I love choosing white or neutral bedding and then accenting with colors.

Toss Pillows

Use throw pillows to accent additional colors and soften your space. Throw pillows are also a great way to bring in more texture and pattern to a neutral space. I used a fun pillow shaped like a flower and other patterned pillows for the bed. You can also throw a pillow onto a chair for extra comfort.

Throw Blankets

Adding throws are some of the best ways to soften space and add style. Don't know how to use a throw? Take a look at this post for additional tips on how to style a throw anywhere. The mint colored throw on the bed is the perfect place to bring in some color. And this teenage girl's room wouldn't be complete without a soft cozy chair and throw to cozy up in.

Colored Nightstand or End Tables

Since our room is very neutral, another option for bringing in color is with small furniture or home decor. Adding a nightstand is super helpful for storage space or placing a clock. Plus, you don't always want all those little knickknacks out in the open, so a table is a good choice for that.

Teenage Girl Bedroom Painted Dresser

To save on cost of purchasing a new dresser, I ended up refinishing this white furniture that I had bought the year before. Add your personal touch and try a furniture makeover instead of buying something brand new. Sometimes all you need is a little update with paint or even stain.

Mirror

Every girl usually wants a full length mirror at this age to start getting ready in their room. I had this stand up mirror that was black and gold and a little dated. To update it I used some chalk paint and now my daughter can twirl her heart out in front of her mirror!

Book Storage

Make your book storage part of your decor! Use a shelf or a basket to store your reading favorites. This gold basket ties in wonderfully with our gold bedroom accents.

Sitting Area for Teenage Girl Bedroom

Everyone loves a book nook or cozy corner, especially your teen. Cute teen rooms should all have a nook for reading, listening to music, talking on the phone or relaxing. This fun blue chair adds a bright highlight amidst the neutral coloring.

Layered Rugs

Did you know that you can use a rug on top of carpet? A rug is great to add to a bedroom because it can frame an area or add an overall style to a bedroom. This corner rug highlights the chair nook and makes it more comfy and cozy. Heaven sent for a teenage girl bedroom! You can also add a rug under the foot of a bed to draw more a focal point.

Gallery Walls

A good collage wall or gallery wall is a fun way to bring in a variety of wall decorations for your teenage girl bedroom. I included some picture prints, word cutouts, a homemade dream catcher we made at camp, and a printable scroll wall hanging. Find objects or pictures that mean something to your teen!

Light Fixtures

If your room has a theme, try to include light fixtures that will highlight your space. We opted for some fancy and girly light fixtures that would brighten the space, but also had an element of design.

Wall Art

And last of all, choose a main work of art to be a highlight in your teen room. I wanted to give each of my girls a sign I had made. This is one of my favorite quotes. We are all red heads with freckles and sometimes the world does not view that as beautiful. But as I have gotten older and wiser, I have come to realize these traits are defining characteristics of who I am and I feel the same way about my daughters. This quote will be a reminder to her that she is beautiful just the way she is!

Ideas for Teen Girl Bedroom Decor

These 17 fun designs ideas are good options for making that teen girl room something extra special. Don't break the bank with expensive furniture and costly decor. Try out these easy tips and DIY decor for a stunning and modern bedroom your teen can't wait to be in.
