Ideas for the perfect way to add a focal point to a blank wall.
Creating gallery walls is one of my favorite ways to decorate. There are so many unique options to create an artistic wall. A gallery wall is a great way to include things you love to tell a story and create a work of art in the process. It is also the best place to display your favorite photos.
Gallery walls are so simple to create that anyone can do it, but a good eye for balance is very helpful. The only items you need are things that can be found around your house, or items that are important to you. Take a look at these 10 easy and stylish DIY gallery wall ideas to create the perfect accent wall.
10 Options for DIY Gallery Wall Ideas
Your own gallery wall can be a piece of art for all to enjoy. From a picture wall to displaying a 3 dimensional object, your gallery wall is a great place to make a statement piece. Take a look at each of these unique ways to create your own design style.
Family Photo Wall
This big living room wall is the first thing you see when you walk in my
front door. It is a large space to display family photos and favorite objects I love. For this gallery wall I used all the same frames for every picture and hung them symmetrical like a grid gallery wall.

Gold Frame Eclectic Gallery Wall
The great thing about gallery walls is you can customize them however you want. This next one is an eclectic style with one of the main design elements being gold frames.
For this themed gallery wall I incorporated gold frames and lettering for a cohesive look. This is a great option if you can incorporate a consistent theme or color scheme into your gallery wall layout. The amazing details are all unique with different frames, but yet all go together because they are the same color palette.
I also added a beautiful burlap LOVE print from Mr and Missis that adds great texture to the wall. It is also fun to incorporate different sizes of frames and objects to create a stunning gallery wall. The family cutout takes center stage and also adds an additional pop of color.
You can create this same look with all black frames or white frames.
Black and White Photo Gallery Wall
For this style of gallery wall I picked three colors of frames with a similar style to create this display. All black and white photos make it look fluid and not too busy. When hanging frames of different sizes a good rule of thumb is to start with the largest piece and then fill in empty spots with the smaller frames.
Girl Bedroom Gallery Wall
Gallery walls are all over the main living areas of my home, but not too many in the bedrooms. That was remedied by adding a girl gallery wall into my daughter's new room when we redid our basement. This is the perfect addition for creating an adorable and personalized girl bedroom.
How to Create the Perfect Girl Gallery Wall
While putting up random pieces can be fun, the most important tip is to decorate with meaning. My daughter's gallery wall is a collection of things she has made or things we have found together that are important.
A fun way to incorporate style is to use words as well as objects along with some pictures. This will give more of a 3-dimensional effect and really make the wall pop!
For a bedroom or playroom gallery wall, don't be afraid to use a variety of color to make it unique. While you can use things that are the same size, it will look better if you can get a variety of sizes to display.
This perfect gallery wall turned out so well! If you are needing something for a little girl's room, this is a great option. Your little girl will just love looking at all the things that are important to her!
Gallery Wall for a Small Space
When your wall space is limited, it is still possible to add a fun gallery wall. There isn't much space between the crown molding and wall moldings, but there is just enough to add some cute fun things in this bedroom.
I wanted the room to be bright and cheery and since the room is so small I went with a light wall color. The light paint color helps the room feel a little bigger with the added color in furniture and decor pieces.
The wall art in this bedroom is a collection of things I have found or made. I found the Marquee 'K' and 'L' at Kohl's, for the first letters of my daughters' names. They are battery operated so they even work hanging on the wall! This is a quick and easy idea to add style to a small space.
Hallway Gallery Wall
Needing more DIY gallery wall ideas? This hallway wall is one of my very favorites. A fun wall to share a little bit about your family and things you love is a great addition to your home.
The flash card represents our family 2 parents + 3 kids. The 'L' is for Larsen. A cute little white frame says “you make me happy”. There are sheets of music in the round frames because my girls love to sing. The pallet “always be thankful” serves as a reminder. The shutter belonged to a grandparent.
The grandfather clock was the first piece of furniture my husband and I bought together and a fun project for me. See how I refinished it here. All these things represent our family, making a house feel like a home.
Boho Gallery Wall
Another option for DIY gallery wall ideas is utilizing decorations that are not your typical photo gallery walls. We opted for creating our own Bohemian style wall hangings for this boho wall in my daughter's new midcentury style room. What a fun change to a traditional framed gallery wall!
Peg Board Gallery Wall
You can also get a little creative by implementing a peg board gallery wall. I love that this gallery wall has a variety of midcentury vibes. If you don't like typical picture ledges and empty frames, this is a perfect solution to combining some modern elements with a gallery wall. Make your own DIY peg board here!
Simple Gallery Wall for your Entry Way
An entry way is an ideal space for displaying a good gallery wall. It can set the mood and theme of your home upon entrance. I included a simple gallery wall with a few word cutouts and small pictures next to our front door. The entry wall with the table continues this simple farmhouse theme with the farmhouse wood sign, wreath and decorative windows.
Boy Room Gallery Wall
And last, an accent wall in this little boy room is a great example of additional DIY gallery wall ideas. This room was especially fun to create with the car themed wall gallery. The silver bumper is mounted on the wall and accented with a word cutout, car signs and a few other small decorations.
How to Hang a Family Photo Gallery Wall
Have you ever tried to hang a family photo gallery wall? I have ended up with way too many holes in the wall. Here is a system to hang it right the first time!
Supplies to Hang a Family Photo Gallery Wall
- Frames - I got mine from Frame It Easy. They print your pictures, frame them and ship them right to your door.
- Post board
- Pencil
- Tape measure
- Nails
- Hammer
How to Hang a Gallery Wall
Lay everything out on the floor. Assemble it how you want it on the wall.
Determine where center is and hang your first 2 pictures, one on top of the other.
Take your poster board and trace around your picture frame.
Cut it out so you have the exact size of your frames.
Next, flip your frame over and measure how far the wire is from the top of the frame. Since wire has some flex to it you want to pull the wire tight.
For example, with this frame the wire straight across was 5" from the top of the frame. When I pulled it tight it was only 4.5" from the top of the frame. You want the measurement for when it is pulled tight.
Now it is time to transfer your measurements to the poster board. I meausured 4.5" from the top and made a dot. I then figured out my center measurement. My frames are 18x18 so 9" is center.
Figure out how far apart you want your frames to be. I went with 1" apart on all sides.
Get your poster board up on the wall right where you want it. Then take a tac and stick it in where you made your mark. Press the tac into the wall as hard as possible. This will make your mark so you know where the nail needs to go!
Remove the poster board, hammer in your nail and hang your picture.
I continued to use the poster board through out the entire wall!
And there you have a quick and painless way to hang a family photo gallery wall! Check out more detail on my living room here.
