How to Create DIY Back Porch Space
Unless you have a brand new home where you can design the outdoor area by preference, most homeowners have to customize existing space for ideal usability. Giving your front yard or back yard an overhaul isn't easy but the resulting outdoor living space is worth it.
Creating an outdoor space to use at our temporary home was priority. This back porch area is a great place for socializing outdoors, but it needed a little work. With a few DIY projects, this space transformed into a great addition for our family to spend time together. Take a look at these DIY back porch ideas to make your own patio space more usable.
Pick a Style for DIY Back Porch
There are several items to consider when planning out your favorite outdoor space. The first thing is to pick out a style for your exterior space. Consider if you want your outside theme to be fluid with your interior style. Also decide if you want your back yard to be consistent with the front of the house too.
For this back porch makeover, I wanted a Boho theme with a little flair of modern. A great way to achieve this style is with neutral outdoor furniture paired with a pop of color. Nature does all the rest!
General Clean Up of Outdoor Space
You'd be surprised at how much a little elbow grit and time can achieve in a space, whether that be interior or exterior. Giving your outdoors a good clean up makes your space comfortable and desirable. Here are a few ideas to help:
- Weed the flower beds - see my favorite Grampa's weeder here!
- Tidy flower pots and replace dead plants
- Power wash concrete and reseal if needed
- Sweep covered patio or screen porch area
- Remove spider webs and bug nests from roofing and back door
- Trim large tree branches with pruners
- Add a coat of paint or sealant to any decking
- Clean pots from winter
- Apply bug killer if needed - grab some at Home Depot or Lowe's
Make Your Space Functional
Your yard is really an extension of your home. Consider how you will use your space, such as needing a dining area or outdoor seating for gatherings. You might find that in some cases you already have the space, but you need to rework it to fit your needs. In other cases, it may be worth looking into options for extending a back porch or patio to achieve maximum usable space. This may mean putting in additional concrete or another material to extend.
Another major factor to consider is shade for your back porch cover. If you already have an attached covered patio, great! If not, it might be time to consider some type of back porch awning, a stand-alone pergola structure, a built-on pergola, or even portable umbrellas that can be shifted as needed.
In our case, this yard has so many trees that we didn't need anything else to provide shade. But it is important to consider to make sure that you have a usable space for your needs.
DIY Ideas for Outdoor Furniture
Our main purpose for this small space was to have a social gathering area to relax and hang out. It's best to find patio furniture that is a good option for your style choice and functionality. I wanted something a bit different, but still comfortable. Because let's be honest, who wants to hang around if the furniture is uncomfortable?
I found the perfect furniture at Article. Not only was it the Boho style in neutral colors I was looking for, but it is so comfy. Article has recently expanded some of their outdoor furniture line to include a fresh look and material options. Sophisticated Bohemian, Garden Scandinavian, and Industrial Pop are some of the fun new styles. I love that you can mix and match to get that perfect look for your patio. (shop here)
Sectional
This sectional from Article (shop here) is perfect for taking summer naps because of the deep seating and soft cushions. What better way to spend an afternoon? Make sure you invest in something that is made well and not with cheap materials for durability.
I also love the design element and texture the wicker adds to the space. The entire frame except for the legs are covered in wicker. The frame of this couch is metal, making it one sturdy piece of furniture for your beautiful porch.
The wood legs also give the couch a modern flair as well. The couch also has the same wood and grey color scheme as the other pieces of furniture. This is a good way to bring everything together.
Porch Ideas for Chairs
Some type of patio chair is ideal for additional seating and conversation. These comfy chairs embellish your home's curb appeal with their Boho vibes. I love the shape and style. Plus, they are oh so comfy.
If your backyard is a small area, a few other smaller chair options to consider on your covered porch are rocking chairs, a porch swing, or a small bench. These can work on front porches too! We recently moved and now we are using this furniture next to our pool.
Sometimes I need more temporary seating. These metal chairs are perfect to pull out for guests.
Tables
Adding small tables will help to soften the space and provide an area for some additional porch decor. To add a touch of modern to this DIY back porch I used this small side table with clean lines. The color scheme blends the styles perfectly together.
Add Stylish Accessories
Once you have your main pieces for your DIY backyard ideas you can add accessories to really bring the whole look together.
Pillows and Throws
Using toss pillows and throws is a great idea for bringing in bright colors and texture. I added in tones of a pink color palette to finish off the look with these fun throw pillows and blanket from Target.
Flowers and Greenery
Bringing in flowers and greenery is one of my absolute favorite ways to complete a space. I added in a few faux plants and real potted flowers for the finishing touch. Try incorporating a decorative plant stand or pots to illustrate more of the theme. It also helps to have different heights varying elements of focus.
You can also utilize floral hanging baskets, arrange a fresh bouquet for your outdoor table or use faux branches.
Outdoor Lighting
While natural lighting is desired for the daytime, make sure to include other lighting options for nighttime. I love to use string lights to light up my back porch space. The soft glow of these lights at night illuminates the beautiful space.
Other options for your DIY back porch ideas may be:
- an outdoor rug
- screened porch
- a fire pit
- a water feature
- vertical floral designs like lattice panels
- play areas for kids
