Types of Backyard Deck Design
Consider the various types of backyard deck ideas to meet the needs for your outdoor living space. My deck is composite decking with a covered deck. With our busy schedules, the composite materials are a great option for our family because of the low maintenance.
These are additional deck materials to weigh in as you regard different designs for your dream backyard.
- Wooden decks - more maintenance, but cheaper cost
- Freestanding deck or floating deck - usually not attached directly to your home and a good idea if you want more options on deck location
- Multi-level decks
- A deck cover for shade or privacy
- A ground-level deck versus a raised deck
How to Change a Deck Space on a Budget
Transform your outdoor area into an extension of your living room with any of these backyard deck design ideas.
Outdoor Rugs
Start by picking out a rug and furniture to compliment. You can get a completely different look for your deck design by simply changing out your outdoor rug. Just like a fresh coat of paint, changing the style of your rug is an affordable and good option that makes a big difference in your exterior design.
If your home is in a windy area like my house, take a look here at how I secure my rugs so they don't blow all over the place.
And here are different styles that I have used and switched out.
This rug pulls in neutral gray and white tones that visibly contrasts the dark coloring in the couch. It's a great idea for creating more of a boho look while brightening up the space.
And this rug creates a completely different look for our lounge area with its taupe and cream palette, creating a more modern appeal to the backyard deck design.
I love the darker weave for this rug that ties in my toss pillows and throw blanket. A darker rug can be a little bit easier to keep clean, depending on where you use it.
You can shop these gorgeous outdoor rugs here.
Hot Tip: A great way to keep your outdoor rugs clean is by using a power washer, like below!
Don't be afraid to add a pop of color to your deck with a fun, colorful rug. This is the easiest way to change up the entire look of your backyard oasis. You can easily find budget-friendly ideas for your next rug.
Backyard Deck Outdoor Furniture
Now, let's talk about furniture. Make sure the pieces you choose not only create a focal point, but also provide functional seating areas. Different furniture can change up your small spaces and bring new life to your deck.
A nice and neutral furniture set like this one is always a great addition. I love the neutral colors of this collection. A small deck idea would be to use a set with multiple pieces. This may be easier to fit into your living space.
I also love this outdoor couch that is a dark color and perfect for taking a nap on. Depending on your deck size and style choice, you can find an ideal option for a tight budget.
Because it is outdoor furniture, your couches may collect more hair and fur than normal. Keep your furniture clean with this fantastic hair remover tool. I have used this on my carpets and on my couches. See the video for how to use it!
Accessories for Backyard Deck Design
It doesn't take much money to add a little decor and is an easy way to embellish your exterior space. After all, a well-designed backyard deck is going to be more appealing and usable. Add accessories to a coffee table or even use a pouf as a table or for additional seating. And I always add in a few throw pillows for extra style and comfort.
Lanterns are a favorite outdoor decoration that I try to use in both the front porch of my house and my back patio area.
Any time you can add a small container garden or greenery in pots will add a beautiful design element from the vases and plants.
Beyond just adding a few decorative elements, consider investing in functional pieces as well. For example, a stylish yet sturdy umbrella is the best way to provide shade and make your outdoor space more inviting, while adding a hot tub creates a relaxing oasis. Don't be afraid to think outside the traditional patio furniture box and mix and match different pieces for a unique look.
Light Features
A great option for deck design decor is to use some kind of light feature. In our remodelled home, we changed up our back deck by painting and adding string lights similar to these.
But we also have these lights that are really fun in our current backyard design.
DIY Ideas for Backyard Deck Design
A backyard deck design is the perfect way to make the most of an outdoor area. Looking to add a convenient spot for grilling? What about a comfortable spot to relax with family and friends? Maybe a beautiful stage for outdoor entertaining? With careful planning, the right materials and a bit of elbow grease, it's possible to design a backyard deck that meets all of your needs while simultaneously upgrading your property.
When it comes to designing and building a backyard deck, one of the most important pieces of advice is to think long-term.
