Coffee Table FAQ
How to Decorate a Round Coffee Table?
First thing, let's chat coffee tables. The shape of your table won't necessarily matter for your decorative items. However, round and rectangular shapes each have their purpose. A round coffee table may be better for a small family room because it takes up less space. And sometimes, depending on your furniture layout, a round table is more accessible and open.
A rectangular coffee table or square one has advantages in a narrow room because of space limitations. It also looks best with 90 degree sectionals that follow straight lines for cohesive purposes. For my personal style, I prefer a rectangular table for the clean lines and modern aesthetics. Rectangular or square shapes are a good idea for a large space, but not ideal for a small space.
Can I Build My Own Coffee Table?
Yes, you totally can. The easy way that I have done it is by starting with a scrap table for the base so my basic structure is done, and then improving it. This is how I created my DIY farmhouse sofa table and my modern fluted coffee table in our bonus room.
However, you can also start from scratch, like I did with my X frame farmhouse table. You can do something like that on a smaller scale if you love the farmhouse look. I also used part of an online tutorial to help me with my modern DIY nightstands in my son's bedroom.
But for many, building a good coffee table may not be your thing. And that's ok too! There are many good options to buy. You can check out your local Home Goods store or I have found several of my tables on Amazon.
How to Make My Own Coffee Table Decor?
If you want to save money on decor items, a great way to do that is by making your own. In fact, I have made several coffee table decorations that you can DIY too. Here are a handful:
- DIY wood lantern
- Aged pottery
- Whitewashed terra cotta pots
- Wood candle centerpiece
- DIY wooden plant stand
- Create your own flower arrangement
- Try a few holiday themed - succulent pumpkins or terra cotta Pottery Barn knock-off pumpkins
- DIY spring centerpieces
Creating Stunning Coffee Table Decor Ideas
As interior designers and DIYers, we tend to have a few secrets up our sleeves when it comes to decorating your home. Since this is the place you reside all the time, you want it to look good with minimal effort. Let me share a few designer secrets to help you capture the easy way to style your decor on your everyday coffee table.
Balancing Objects of Varying Heights
When it comes to creating a visually appealing coffee table vignette, balancing objects of varying heights is key. By incorporating items of different heights, such as tall vases, medium-sized stack of books, and smaller items, you can add depth and dimension to your display.
This technique helps draw the eye in and creates a sense of visual interest. As we delve into how to incorporate natural elements for color, you'll see how balancing objects of varying heights plays a crucial role in creating the perfect coffee table display.
You can see for both of these coffee table centerpieces, I started with a tall vase of leafy branches or greens. To create a cohesive look, I balanced the table decor with a variety of heights. This includes the taper candles for a similar height and then filling in with smaller coffee table accessories like a large bowl or container and garland.
Incorporating Natural Elements for Color
To add a pop of color and bring a touch of nature into your table decor, consider incorporating natural elements like a small potted plant or a decorative tray with fresh fruit. These items not only add a vibrant splash to your color palette but also breathe life into your display.
I chose a simple potted plant for visual appeal on my fluted table. You can see how to make this coffee table design in detail here.
And in my living room, I opted for a layered look with more branches. However, you can also use a vase of fresh flowers or any type of faux stem that you love.
By seamlessly blending in these natural elements, you can create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere that complements the overall aesthetic of your space. As we explore the use of natural elements for color, keep in mind how these decorative accents can enhance the visual appeal and create a stunning focal point.
Utilizing a Stack of Books for Dimension
For added visual interest and depth, consider using stacks of books as part of your modern coffee table decor. This simple yet effective technique is one of my favorite things because it allows you to play with height and create dimension within your display. Select favorite books with varying sizes, colors, and textures to add personality and character. Experiment with different arrangements and orientations to find the perfect balance.
Utilizing a stack of books not only adds a touch of sophistication but also serves as a functional and versatile element in your styling repertoire. Selecting decorative items with purpose will further enhance the overall look and feel of your coffee table setup.
Selecting Decorative Items with Purpose
When curating your coffee table vignette, it's crucial to select decorative pieces with purpose. Each item you choose should not only contribute to the overall aesthetic, but also serve a specific function within the display. Whether it's a sentimental trinket that adds a personal touch or an item that ties in with your color scheme, every piece should have a reason for being included.
By thoughtfully selecting each item, you can create a cohesive and visually appealing table that tells a story about your style and taste. But don't forget, enhancing the display with a large tray can help tie everything together seamlessly.
Enhancing the Display with a Large Tray
Enhancing the display with a large tray can provide both a practical and aesthetic benefit to your coffee table. Not only does a tray help corral smaller items and prevent them from looking cluttered, but it also creates a unified base that ties everything together.
Opt for a tray that complements the style and size of your coffee table. Consider choosing one with interesting textures or patterns to add visual interest. Using a tray can elevate the overall look and make it appear more intentional and polished.
Coffee Table Decor Ideas
Incorporating objects of varying heights, natural elements, stack of books, purposeful decorative items, and a large tray are the key elements to creating stylish coffee table decor. By following these principles, you can craft a visually captivating display that reflects your personal style and enhances your living space.
Get creative, experiment with different combinations, and watch your coffee table transform into a chic focal point that will leave your guests in awe. Remember, a well-styled coffee table is not just a surface to place your cup of coffee. It's also a reflection of your unique taste and personality.
Happy Decorating!
