How to Build a DIY Rustic Coffee Table
Choosing the Right Materials
When it comes to building your own coffee table, choosing the right materials is essential to achieving the look and feel you desire. I wanted this piece to be a solid wood coffee table. Opting for reclaimed wood can add a sense of history and character to your piece, while incorporating metal accents can give it an industrial edge. Consider the overall aesthetic you're aiming for and select materials that complement your vision.
Keep in mind the durability and sustainability of the materials you choose, as they will impact the longevity and environmental impact of your project. Take the time to carefully select your materials to set the foundation for a beautiful coffee table that you can be proud of.
Material List
- 8 - 2x4s for frame - grab from Home Depot or another lumber store
- Rough sawn wood that my papa found in a field - you can also use any scrap wood piece or wooden boards you have on hand
- Tape measure
- Wood glue
- Framing nailer or drill
- Table saw
- Circular saw
- Kreg jig
- Handheld planer

Prepare Your Workspace
Before diving into the construction of your rustic DIY coffee table, it is important to prepare your workspace for optimal efficiency and safety. Clear out any clutter or unnecessary items from your work area to provide ample space for your assembly. Ensure that you have access to all the tools and equipment you'll need, such as a saw, drill, sandpaper, and measuring tape.
Setting up a designated workbench or table can help keep your DIY project organized and prevent any accidental damage to your materials. Establish a clean and well-equipped workspace so you'll be ready to jump into the exciting process of building your square coffee table.
Building Your Rustic Coffee Table
Once your workspace is prepped and ready, it's time to focus on building your gorgeous coffee table.
Build the Frame
First step, building the base for your new table. This foundational piece will set the stage for the overall look and functionality of your project, so we want to do it right!
I wanted this wooden coffee table to be approximately 44"x44". You will need 8 - 2x4s to achieve this. 7 may also work if your cuts are exact, but in case of mistakes I like to have extra wood.
Cut your 2x4s to 42 inches. This will allow 1 inch thick wood on all sides. Use a framing nailer (if you have one) and wood glue to hold your wood planks together. A drill will also work if you do not have a framing nailer.
Build the top and bottom frames, then use an 11 inch long 2x4 to attach them together. Your table base will be about 18 inches tall. Use your framing nailer and wood glue to toenail to the top and bottom pieces. Another way to do this is by using a kreg jig and drilling pocket holes to attach them together.
Add Top Boards and Side Planks
To keep the rustic look, this wood has not been smoothed out by a planer. That's ok because I love the texture. However, you can use a table saw to clean up the edges for a tight fitting.
Start with the top boards for the table top. Then work your way down the side pieces.
Because I wanted a waterfall look where the wood essentially wraps around to the base of the table, I cut all the boards at 45 degree angles with the table saw.
I opted not to biscuit join the wood and instead, fit the pieces as I go. If a piece is too thick, use a handheld planer and smooth out the back.
Use Wood Fill
When your wood pieces are all assembled on your rustic coffee table, it is time to add the wood fill to finish off the outside edge. I wanted a wood fill that would blend well with my wood coloring, so I made my own wood fill color to match using fine sawdust and wood glue. Mix these up in a container until you reach your desired consistency. Apply it to the wood edges with a putty knife, starting at the top of the table.
When you are done applying, let the wood fill dry until it is tacky. Then, use an orbital sander and run it along the wood. You can also use high grit sandpaper. The tacky glue will pick up some of the sanded dust and create a nice finished wood fill.
Even Out the Bottom
When your table is all dry, turn it on its side. Use a circular saw and kreg jig to even out the bottom pieces of wood.

Adding the Finishing Touches

I absolutely love the rustic farmhouse look, so I opted to leave this new wood table as is. However, you can also add a stain to your wood or even a clear coat if desired.
