Spice Up a Room with Wall Treatments

Adding wall treatments to a room is a great way to add texture and a fun element.  I wanted to share with you some of the wall covering in our house.  As I was writing this post I realized I have a different wall treatment in almost every room.  Honestly I really love it, I feel like it is a great way to spice up a room and add variety in your decorating.

Wall Treatments For Spicing Up A Room

Wainscoting

Have you ever wondered what Wainscoting really is ?  It is wooden paneling that lines the lower part of the walls of a room.

Here are a few reasons I love wainscoting:

  • Easy installation
  • Makes a home feel custom
  • Rarely goes out of style
  • Can be done with leftover moldings a lot of times

This wainscoting goes ⅔ of the way up the wall. It is super easy to create this look. You need a base along the bottom, top rail and slats measured evenly all along the wall in the same proportion. I used a semi- gloss paint for both the wall and the moldings to create a paneling look.

Wainscoting can get expensive at times, but I got a little creative and ripped down sheets of MDF to create this look for under $50! (post here)

This type of wainscoting creates a great backdrop for your furniture as well!

Sometimes it is fun to think outside of the box on wall treatments.  We originally planned for this wainscoting to turn out very differently, but what we wanted to do was not going as planned so we started experimenting and this is what we came up with.  Honestly I LOVE it.  It adds a fun design element to our little boys nursery.

Wainscoting can also be floor to ceiling, as well as used for accent walls.  I was not totally sure what I wanted to do with this large wall so my hubby create this using our leftover moldings.  (tutorial here)

Shiplap

Shiplap is one of my favorites to install for a few reasons:

  • It is cheap (post here)
  • It covers holes and wall imperfections
  • It adds so much texture
  • It is a great option for an accent wall

I also have a shiplap wall in my entry way. This makes this wall stand out and accents the small space.

And in my new pantry. (post here)

I went with shiplap in all of these places because all of the walls either had remains of wallpaper, holes or they were dinged up!  It was either hire someone to put up new sheetrock or give myself another option.

Wallpaper

While I was taking down wallpaper a few years ago I swore I would never put it back up!  Well it looks like I am eating my words because I am kind of LOVING it!  However, I didn't go wallpaper crazy in this space.  I added wallpaper on this one wall on top of the chair rail.  It is the perfect amount to create a fun accent wall without going too crazy. There are so many fun ways to incorporate different wall treatments to add a little spice in your home decor. Try it out!!
