Farmhouse Pantry Overhaul on a Budget

We have done a lot of remodeling to our home, but our farmhouse pantry is my favorite project by far at this point!  I am so excited to finally have it all complete so I can share it with you!

Our home is a farmhouse style so I wanted to create a farmhouse pantry to go with the style of our home instead of mismatched bi-fold doors. Honestly, the different sized panels on these doors drove me crazy.  When they started to break I refused to pay the price to have new custom sizes made so I had this ugly looking pantry for awhile… but it was worth the wait!

I finally got so sick of the doors I decided it was time for them to go.

I cleaned everything out, which was way too much random crap.  See how the closets are split into 2?  The one on the left was original to the house and the one on the right was added when the previous owners completed the kitchen addition.  Instead of knocking everything out they kept the 2 closets which is what created the 2 different sized doors.

DEMO

I don’t know what it is but I LOVE to demo things!  I got everything out of there until I got to this dividing wall.

We were a little worried that this wall was load bearing so I had someone come and look at it first before I ripped it all out!

As you can see below it was not load bearing so I took everything out up to the crown molding.

Demo is definitely a messy job!

The original plan was to pull everything out, remove the wall and then add overlapping barn doors to hide the shelves.

After everything was ripped out my husband and I both loved how open it made our kitchen/eating area feel.  So we decided to leave it all open.  The only problem… figuring out how to do that and not have it be ridiculously expensive.

Making a Plan

Since the far right closet used to be were part of our kitchen was, there was already power in here and water for the fridge.   Might as well put it to use right?  I drew up this plan for a guide and then we got to work.

I hired an electrician to move the power so we could have a few more switches and these lights over the desk area.

Then I patched all the holes and build the ceiling back.  After that was done I added the shiplap (you can see the tutorial here).

To help keep cost down I made the counter tops from reclaimed wood my grandpa gave me.  I also used the same wood to case in the pantry and create a beam look. And did I mention that we still have plenty usable storage?  With the upper and lower cabinets and the countertop we have utilize our space much better.

We got an ice maker to use the water that was already there and a mini fridge to cool our drinks and any overflow from the kitchen.

I moved our computer into our kitchen so it would be in a centralized location.  It has made doing homework so much easier.

Also, I absolutely love the enlarged “thankful” sign I added to this space. It really completes the space for our family. The “thankful” signs can be purchased here.

I didn’t do anything to the beams… they are naturally weathered!
