Sometimes you look at a room or a wall and you can just tell that something is missing. Well, that empty space in my house prompted me to take a little bit of a decorating detour and design something totally fun and new. If you are desperately needing new ideas for decorating, these are a great alternative option to pictures or frames that still provide fabulous character. Windows and corbels are both unique designs and great for multipurpose.
Where to Find Corbels and Windows
Although I designed and made some of my own window cutouts and corbel styles out of MDF, you can also find these vintage treasures in other places.
- Flea markets
- Antique stores or thrift shop
- Yard sales or estate sales
- Hobby Lobby or another craft store
- Home Depot or Lowe's
- Grandma's house
You can also try custom design options like Etsy or even making your own if you are feeling ambitious.
How to Use Corbels in Decorating
Antique corbels are a great way to bring in a vintage look to your home decorating. They can go especially well with farmhouse style or decor that appeals to rustic or historic design. In fact, a historic home will often have stone corbels as a prominent architectural element for its exterior. But corbels are now frequently used in the interior as well.
- Use a corbel to sit on a shelf or to hold up a shelf, mantel or countertop as decorative brackets or supportive.
- A corbel can also be used as decorative bookends or a table accessory.
- They can also be placed in the corner of a room for a wall/ceiling accent.
- Use them as a focal point to accent posts or beams.
Corbel Styles
Corbels can be made from various elements like solid wood, metal, plaster or stone. I made my imitation corbels using my MDF machine.
And as far as style is concerned, you can pretty much find or design corbels in the stain or color of your choice and in many intricate or basic styles. A corbel can be more modern with straight lines, designed in acanthus leaf, classical baroque with curved designs, and much more.
Corbel on a Table Surface
Vintage corbels are particularly stylish as a decorative element on a table. Style it in a grouping like below, or place it in a tiered tray if you have smaller corbels. You can also use on a side table or entryway tables to fill in dead space.
Corbel Bookends
I also love the look of corbels as bookends on a shelf or on a bookcase. It's an affordable way to add an element of design to your room. I painted these corbels the same color as other furniture in my daughter's room and then used them as an accent piece to soften the space.
And have you ever thought about utilizing them on fireplace mantels to frame in your area? This is another excellent choice for decor placement.
How to Use Windows in Decorating
Vintage windows are a fun element of design that you can add to any room for more visual interest. You can use real window frames or faux window cutouts.
- Use windows to frame other artwork or word cutouts.
- Windows can be great choices for wall, mantel or table accents.
- Wrap greenery or flowers through them for a more decorative display.
Farmhouse Windows
These rustic window cutouts are a stunning option if you want to create more of a vintage farmhouse design in your decor. I love the two-tone look with a stained exterior wood and a white painted interior. This color combination creates a big impact with the decor choices.
These windows provide plenty of options for interior styling. I love them in this family room where they are a beautiful display on the fireplace mantel. These are just big enough that they frame in the wall space surrounding the TV, creating a focus on the decor and not the TV unit. See some other easy option for how you can decorate around a TV here.
And what about styling them in your front entry? These are the perfect pieces of decor to both simplify and brighten your front hallway when visitors greet your home. I like to have decorations that are simple, but also attention worthy. The green wreath hung on the windows add a little extra spice to the room.
Cathedral Style Windows
Do you love those grand cathedral stained glass windows as much as I do? If you are looking for refined European elegance in your decor, then these are a great idea. A cathedral style window is more unique because it brings a classic elegance that a farmhouse style may not. But because my home is more farmhouse decor, I gave these a slightly distressed appearance so they would not look out of place.
Love that wood pallet table top? You can see how I did it here.
These windows are a beautiful accent on my fall mantel with this lovely teal and burgundy color scheme. Cathedral windows definitely add a bit more elegance to your space. They look beautiful for sprucing up a master bedroom or even dining room decor. And while I love that they blend in to the wall, they also are visible enough to provide a gorgeous focal point that isn't too busy.
Lattice Window
Lastly, this lattice window is a simple concept with stunning results. I stained this frame a light color so it wouldn't be too overwhelming for this wall space. You can leave this window frame as is for wall decoration, or spice it up with additional greenery, a word cutout or pictures. This window has a lot of flexibility in the design factor.
A neutral decoration like this is perfect for a room that has brights colors or patterns that are busy. It ties into my bold living room decor really well and draws out the brown tones of my pine flooring and wood accents.
Decorating with corbels and windows not only adds design appeal to any room, but also provides stylish functionality. Thanks to their versatility, windows and corbels can be used in any home style to elevate the overall look and feel while also providing a stylish solution to design issues. From creating architectural accents to bringing natural light and ventilation into a space, windows and corbels offer a variety of decorative features.
Ultimately, these elements allow us to use our creativity to create the living space that meets our needs and expresses our individual style. Take advantage of creating a living space that is as unique and beautiful as you are. The options are endless for home decor with windows and corbels!
