How Floating Shelves Above Your Toilet Will Transform Your Bathroom
Creating a toilet storage idea was necessary for our small bathrooms, especially having girls. But I didn't want an ugly toilet storage unit or medicine cabinet from the 90s that hovers over the toilet area. Incorporating some modern floating shelves above the toilet was exactly what we needed to maintain our bathroom design. See why I love these simple storage solutions!
Floating Shelves Maximize Storage Space
One of the key benefits of installing floating shelves above your toilet is the ability to maximize storage space without sacrificing style. Most bathrooms have limited floor space. So these above toilet shelves provide a sleek and efficient way to keep all your essentials within easy reach on the bathroom shelf. You can see below how I made my own shelves to help with the storage in my girls' bathroom.
Adding over the toilet storage is super helpful because not only do you have extra space for decorative items, but also for bathroom necessities. Use a stylish storage basket or small containers to house any needed items above your toilet. This can be a good spot for feminine products, extra toilet paper, wipes or extra towels.

Now, let's explore how these shelves can not only declutter your bathroom, but also add a touch of elegance to the space.
Add a Touch of Elegance
When it comes to creating a modern bathroom that exudes elegance, every detail matters. A floating shelf above your toilet offers a sophisticated touch to the space, elevating the overall aesthetic and adding a sense of gracefulness to the room. By incorporating these stylish shelves, you not only enhance the functionality of the bathroom but also introduce a touch of refinement that instantly transforms the look and feel of the space.
When we added embellishments to this small powder room, I originally had only wallpaper for this space. Adding display shelves to this blank white wall makes a much more elegant use of the space with the stunning bathroom decor.
Bring a Modern Flair
Incorporating bathroom floating shelves above the toilet can bring a modern flair to your bathroom. The clean lines and minimalist design of these shelves create a sleek and contemporary look, making your bathroom feel like a stylish sanctuary. Embrace the transformative power of these shelves to completely revamp the look and feel of your space effortlessly.
Another option for enhancing this vertical space is to bring in modern materials with your shelving. Instead of shelving made of plastic or cheap materials, use toilet bathroom shelves that are designed out of wood or metal.
Functional and Stylish Solutions
When seeking a functional and stylish toilet storage solution for your bathroom, floating shelves over the toilet are a versatile and practical option. You can really choose any design to go with your bathroom theme. Plus, style your shelves in a way to fit practical needs as well as decorative ones.
Functional Tips for Floating Shelves
I installed 2 floating shelves above the toilet in my girls' primary bathroom. Here are a few tips for what I learned on displaying shelves the right way.
- How high should you hang floating shelves above the toilet? Hang your bottom shelf at a minimum of 16" to 20" above the toilet. This will help give additional space for getting into the toilet's tank lid.
- How far apart should floating shelves be above toilet? I spaced my wall-mounted shelves 12" apart from each other.
- How wide should floating shelves be above toilet? Keep shelve size between 16" to 20", or about the same width as your toilet. This way your toilet area will not overwhelm the bathroom nook.
Style Tips for Floating Shelves
While it used to be common to hang up a towel rack or towel bar above your toilet, don't do it! Having a toilet organizer shelf for decor is a much better use of your space to create a classy interior design.
- Use small jars or clear containers to store items on your built-in shelves, like bath salts, soap, cotton swabs, etc.
- Depending on your shelf depth - you can store towels or toilet paper in a basket
- I love my candle display on the upper shelf - this is great for adding height and elongating this wall space
- Display important handmade pieces or vintage treasures
- Greenery in a bathroom is always a win!
- Vases are very versatile

DIY Wood Floating Shelves
I made these DIY floating shelves to provide extra storage in this small space above the toilet. First, I made the wood frame out of 2x2s. This is the support piece that the box will slide onto. Then, I used power tools to screw the frame into the studs.
After that, I created boxes that slid directly onto the 2x2 frame.
To finish off these shelves, I stained them for a natural look.
For tiny bathrooms, this is an ideal solution instead of bathroom wall cabinets. This is my girls' bathroom, so I used decorative items that could also be used as storage. The black boxes are a great place for feminine hygene products.
Floating Shelves Over a Toilet
Incorporating floating shelves above your toilet offers a game-changing solution to bathroom storage woes. By maximizing space, adding elegance, and transforming the overall look and feel, you can bid farewell to clutter and welcome a chic storage solution.
