How to Style Christmas Decorations on Your Coffee Table
Coffee tables are not just for resting your feet or packing in storage. Put that table to use by making a lovely design space. You can easily create a beautiful Christmas centerpiece for your table display using these helpful do and don't tips.
Don't - Disregard the Center Placement
When creating your own decorative design for your coffee table, begin by establishing a focal point in the center. This can be one item or multiple pieces. However, if using more than one piece of decor, do not put all of your decorative elements on the side of a table, regardless if you have a round table or a rectangular one.
But that doesn't mean that your biggest decor piece has to take center stage directly in the middle either. You can style two contrasting items together as long as you balance the viewpoint. A design can be asymmetrical while still achieving balance.
For this holiday table, I opted for a bit of natural greenery styled in an individual container and placed it slightly off center. I paired the plant with two tall candles for contrast and balance on the opposite side. Both of these items create an asymmetrical balance for the middle of the table, though neither is directly center point of view.
Do - Add Layers for Dimension
One of the best ways to style your beautiful centerpiece is by layering your decorative objects. It would be pretty boring to look at a display that was only one dimensional. Layering creates dimension and texture to form an overall cohesive look that is fluid.
Just like a canvas that is ready for paint, we layer in our decorating too. Start with a base and then add in a few statement pieces, encompassed by additional decor or design elements.
Begin with a base. A basket, bowl or vase is an easy way to do this, but you can also go more primitive and begin with a table runner or mat. Add in a few focal pieces. I wanted some natural elements and so incorporated a large vase with greenery and stems. I also used my classy candle holder with bold, black candles.
Then I added in smaller items into the base layer. My mini tree is stacked on books for added dimension. Surrounding that with a small wooden white garland completed the look.
Don't - Overcrowd
When in doubt, taking a minimal approach is always a great idea over overcrowding. This is a good principle to follow in any decorating for your own home. Don't overwhelm your table and continue to pile all of your Christmas table ideas in one place. What better way to truly enjoy something on display? When there is too much to look at, your eye is unable to focus on your holiday masterpiece.
Bring in a festive touch by adding a few items to your traditional table decor. I swapped out my regular stems for seasonal flocked branches and colored garland. This subtle decor makes a captivating statement with its simplicity.
Do - Add Height
Don't forget to add height to your Christmas coffee table decor ideas. Adding height is the perfect way to elude to a large space and avoid the appearance of overcrowding. Plus, it's always a good idea to have items with contrasting heights so they are complimenting each other instead of competing with one another.
You can see from my coffee table below that I layered the bottom of my wooden dough bowl with frosted greenery and then added height with an elegant candle holder. This design is very simple but looks incredibly classy. The small table on the side also has contrasting heights with all of the large and small greenery bunched together for a little more variety. Small tables are good spots for taller decor like candles or vases because they take up less room.
Do - Incorporate Some Color
While I am a huge fan of designing with a neutral toned base, there is a time and place for adding in a palette of color. Adding pops of color for the holidays is especially fun and invites attention. If you aren't a fan of large waves of color, start with incorporating something small. A coffee table or side table is a good place for that.
Start with your base neutrals, like I did with an off white bowl and white vase. Then add a few more neutrals. My white Christmas house and wooden beads are good neutral accents for this. Top everything off with a few hints of color. I added a small colored garland and then filled the vase with a mix of greenery, white and some red berries. Filling a vase is an easy way to add a pop of color if you don't have small trinkets or figurines to include.
Dressing up your coffee table can give your living room the stylish design it is missing. This red and white themed space looks gorgeous with a decadent Christmas coffee table at the center and a cozy decorated Christmas mantel and fireplace to compliment. I could definitely sit in this nook for hours sipping on hot cocoa and reading a book.
Don't have a coffee table in your living room? The good news is you can still add some festive decorating to other tabletops. Try it out on a side table next to your couch or a console table against the wall. You can even try these tips on the top surface of your entertainment center or cabinet for added elegance.
