5 Best Reasons to Consider Ceiling Paint and Ceiling Accents

How adding ceiling accents and ceiling paint can completely change the look of your room.

Almost every house has some type of accent wall whether it be paint, wallpaper, woodwork or something in between. My own home has several in fact. Taking a standard wall and transforming it into a masterpiece is a great skill to acquire. Why not be truly exceptional and add a ceiling color or accent instead? Ceiling accents are modern, fun and visual inspirations that flow into the theme of your home.

Why Should I Add Ceiling Accents?

ADDS DIMENSION

Do you have low ceiling height in your home? Ceilings with accent designs are the best choice for making your room feel taller.

When we bought our old home, the basement living room had interior walls with huge holes and surface imperfections in the ceiling for speakers and other oddities. Trying to match a ceiling texture like popcorn ceilings and have it flow can be really hard. So instead we decided to cover it all up with bead board.

We painted the 4'x8' sheet and then hung them like shiplap. To cover the seams I used 4" thick MDF molding to create squares. For this room we wanted to use ceiling paint colors that were lighter, to help make the rest of the room feel spacious.

Painting Tips

  • My go-to paint brands are Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. I think it is the best paint to use with good coverage.
  • Use flat paint, eggshell and satin paint for best results on interior walls and ceilings too!
  • Use Satin for woodwork.
  • Sheen can alter the color which can change how a textured ceiling looks.
  • If you are matching your ceiling paint with the wall colors, use the same sheen and type of paint.

Adding a ceiling design helps to make the entire room feel less like a basement, more open and created the appearance of dimension in overall height.

CREATE A FUN FOCAL POINT

Talk about a conversation starter. A creative ceiling can be a fun focal point for any room. In particular, if you have plain white walls in your room, then an accented ceiling will really bring a vibrancy to your space and draw all attention upward. With a ceiling as a main focal point, you are creating the visual centerpiece for the entire room.

CEILING PAINT AND ACCENTS CREATE A COZY ATMOSPHERE

You will find that almost any room that has a design element on its ceiling creates a cozy atmosphere, regardless of having an older home or a new one. When a ceiling is covered in wood or a darker color palette, the room especially feels more cozy and warm.

This dark shiplap ceiling in my son's bedroom definitely changes the mood in the bedroom from cool, to warm and inviting. Instead of white ceiling paint, I wanted a dark finish. So I went with Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams in an eggshell sheen. A flat sheen or satin finish would also be ideal for a bedroom. The painting process on a ceiling can be tricky, but if you have the right tools and are patient, your paint job will turn out amazing!

What better way to relax at night than to fall asleep in a space that is cozy and welcoming.

CEILING PAINT ADDS CHARACTER

Tranforming your ceiling with a fun accent is something that can add a lot of texture and design to your space. Paint is always your best bet to update a space, but taking it one step further and painting the ceiling adds unique character to your room design.

A few tips for painting ceiling:

  • Use a drop cloth to cover flooring and furniture
  • Use good quality paint
  • I always like to do at least 2 coats of paint for best finish
  • Make sure you don't leave roller marks or it will be noticeable
  • Paint in multiple directions on a ceiling if it is textured

And did I mention how much a pop of color can change the design flow of a room? This textured ceiling really pops with the dark paint color versus a lighter color that blends in. Likewise, a ceiling covered in a modern wood pattern or a wallpaper mural is going to strongly stand out in a room versus a blank ceiling.

I liked my son's ceiling color so much that I decided it was the best option for my office too. This Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams is the best ceiling paint color to see all the details of the textured ceiling. And whether you have smooth ceilings or not, this single color is a great choice for adding tons of character to your room.

HARD TO DAMAGE

And I have to mention that as a parent to younger kids, walls get damaged All. The. Time. This is really hard to avoid unless your children are angelic and don't move a muscle in your house. What I love about a ceiling accent is that it is really hard to ruin. That beautiful ceiling can sit up there untouched for all to look at and enjoy... while I patch up my dented walls. I love the damage-free ceilings!

Ceiling Accents

Influence the whole flow of your home with a stunning ceiling accent to create a beautiful focal point. Whether you choose ceiling paint or a fun wooden embellishment, your ceiling can create a cozy atmosphere and gorgeous character for all to enjoy.

Happy Decorating!
