How to Plan a 60th Birthday Celebration
Planning a 60th birthday worth celebrating can be a fun event. Let me help you plan that special day with these party planning ideas.
60th Birthday Party Theme
Choose a themed party that reflects the taste and style of your guest of honor. This can be anything they would love, from a low-key get together for the whole family to a surprise party at a fancy venue. The options are endless. Your theme can also revolve around a color scheme, a place, a phrase or even a song.
Here are a few suggestions for party themes worth thinking about.
- Fancy dress party
- Celebrate by decade party
- Vegas night
- Spa day birthday
- Down on the dance floor party
- Masquerade ball
- Wine tasting party
- Birthday focused on specific outdoor activities or sport
- At home party
Focal Point for a Happy 60th Birthday
Once your party venue and theme are settled, it's a great idea to have a large focal point or main attraction. This can provide a beautiful setting, in addition to having a helpful speaking point in conversation.
We opted to host my mom's 60th birthday party at our home because it was large enough to fit everyone and eliminate additional venue cost. When you choose to go with a home party, you want to spruce up the environment as much as possible to make it feel really special.
I opted to change out our traditional balloon garland for a large, round balloon circle stand that would be a more elegant focal point and bring a wow factor to the room.
BALLOON CIRCLE
You can find everything needed here.
To make this balloon arch circle, I used latex balloons, two kits from Amazon. It is a lot of balloons so additional help is a great idea! We also opted for a beautiful theme of varying rose shades of happy birthday balloons for a personalized touch.
Once your balloons are put together, a metal balloon circle makes hanging them so much easier.
I filled the whole balloon strip that came with one of the kits and half of the other strip.
Once the balloon circle is completed and hanging, you can add numbers or even a picture in the middle. The numbers 6-0 are so fun for a big birthday bash.
Guests
Depending on the type of party you are hosting, make sure to include all the appropriate party guests. If your birthday event will be more intimate, perhaps it is best to only include family and closest friends. But if this a bigger celebration, it is also important to include neighbors, co-workers and friends of the guest of honor.
Entertainment
It's a good idea to also think about a form of entertainment. That can be as simple as music, a live band, favorite songs or a slide show down memory lane.
Best 60th Birthday Gift
Don't forget to bring a thoughtful gift for that special someone. Turning 60 requires a little more effort and thought into your gift. And while a gift card is always appreciated, consider some of the following for reaching that important milestone:
- Items off a bucket list
- A road trip
- Cooking classes for a new cuisine style
- A food tour around a big city
- Dance classes together
- Favorite memories together, written down or recorded
- A cruise - a good gift from a spouse
- Weekend birthday destination
- Trip to spending time with grandkids
Food Ideas for 60th Birthday
For this party at home, we opted to keep the food easy, but still make it visually appealing. A great way to simplify is to order food through other venues and then put in a nice display at home. I ordered platters from Costco and then moved them to trays for a more custom look. See how nice these wraps look when they are arranged on fancy serve ware.
Finger food is another great option for party food that makes it easier to serve. A charcuterie board is a fun way to do this that also provides a lot of option for customizing based on your audience.
For a cake we decided on a lemon bundt cake and a red velvet bundt cake. These are easy to serve and make a delicious birthday cake. You could also swap cake for cheesecake, eclairs or small pastry desserts for the dessert table.
Small sandwiches and rolled up meats and cheeses make this look a little more elegant, while providing a few other main options for good food. You definitely want to include a variety so guests can grab a little bit of everything and nothing runs out.
You can find any of these party essential trays and serving stands here. A good tip is to layer your food items so they are providing some dimension and height to your table.
