Explore fun and practical DIY projects that add value and style to your home, perfect for beginners and experienced DIYers.
When we were building our home, we knew we wanted to put our own stamp on every corner—not just through paint and furniture, but by building the spaces that would shape our family’s everyday life. From cozy nooks to major transformations, each project tells a story, holds memories, and adds a little more heart to our home.
Here are our top 10 home builds—our favorite diy projects that we’ve poured time, love, and a lot of sawdust into!
Built-In Bunk Bed for Little Buddy
This one holds a special place in my heart. Designing and building a built-in bunk bed for our little buddy was equal parts fun and sentimental. We wanted something sturdy, space-saving, and of course, a bit magical. With a ladder, guard rails, and a cozy hidden nook, it’s not just a bed. It is an adventure zone that can grow with him through the years. It was easier to build than I anticipated, see how I built it here.
Custom Walk-In Closet for Our Primary Bedroom
I really wanted the walk in closet of my dreams. But when the bids came in over $20,000 I decided it was time to figure out how to build a closet. You can see the full tutorial here. I added lots of shelves, double hanging rods, dedicated shoe storage and an island with lots of drawer storage. It’s practical, yes—but it also feels like a little personal retreat.
Kid-Sized Walk-In Closet
Even the kids get in on the DIY projects with luxurious closets! We carved out a small walk-in closet just for them. They helped me design what they wanted. (see more details here) Which included low-hanging rods, cubbies for toys and clothes, and room to grow. It helps keep their room tidy (most days) and makes it easier for them to take ownership of their space.
Mudroom Lockers
If you’ve ever tripped over 17 pairs of shoes or searched endlessly for a lost backpack, you’ll understand why this build was a game changer. (Tutorial Here) We added individual lockers for each family member in the mudroom, complete with hooks, cubbies, and bench seating. It's one of the most functional—and used—spaces in the whole house.
Built-In Bookshelves with Window Bench
This one was a labor of love. (tutorial here) We turned a blank wall into a cozy reading spot with built-in bookshelves flanking a sunny window, topped off with a bench below that is hollow for storage. It’s where we read, dream, and sometimes nap in the sunlight. The storage and charm it adds? Bonus.
Porch Swing (That Fits a Crib Mattress!)
We dreamed of lazy evenings on the porch, and this oversized swing made it a reality. Designed to fit a crib-sized mattress, it’s basically an outdoor daybed. We’ve spent countless hours here—rocking babies, sipping coffee, and watching sunsets. It’s pure peace. You can build one of these too, see all the details here.
Most difficult DIY project? Our Staircase
This was one of the more intense DIYs, but building our own staircase taught us so much—and it turned out beautifully. With solid treads, custom railings, and a classic design, it’s both a structural statement and a reminder of how far we’ve come (literally and figuratively).
Fireplace Mantel & Surround
We wanted the fireplace to feel like a focal point, so we built a custom mantel and surround that feels both timeless and homey. Trim details, clean lines, and a board and batten gave it the charm we were going for. It’s now the heart of our keeping room, especially during the holidays.
Family Room Entertainment Center
Instead of buying a bulky media console, we went all in on a built-in entertainment center that blends seamlessly with our walls. See how we built it here. With closed storage, display shelves, and space for the TV, it’s stylish and super functional. Bonus: we finally have a place for all the remotes.
Deck and Railings
One of our biggest outdoor projects—and totally worth it. We built our deck and railings from scratch, and it’s become a go-to hangout spot. Whether it’s hosting barbecues, soaking up sunshine, or just watching the kids play in the yard, this deck is one of the best additions we’ve made to our home.
Built with Love
Each of these projects came with its own set of challenges, late nights, and learning curves—but also unforgettable memories and a whole lot of satisfaction. There’s nothing quite like building something with your own hands and then watching it become part of your family’s daily rhythm.
Happy DIY-ing
