How to Layer Bedding for a Designer Look
There are a few different ways you can achieve a layered look to make a bed. It all will depend on your personal style. Here are the basics for how to layer your bedding.
- Begin with protecting your mattress - use a mattress topper, mattress pad, or some other protective cover.
- Add a fitted sheet, followed by your top sheet. If you don't love flat sheets, a soft cotton blanket is a good option. However, you might want to add one anyway during cooler months for extra warmth, in addition to your sheets.
- Choose your desired top layer: down comforter, quilt, linen duvet cover, etc.
- If your top layer is fairly thin, or if you really want your bed to appear extra thick, you can add a fluffy down comforter to make it look especially cozy. Fold it back towards the head of the bed to create a plush, thick layer by your pillows.
- Add extra folded blankets or throws on top for decorative purposes.

Selecting the Right Color Palette
When it comes to bedding layering, choosing the right color palette is essential in creating a cohesive and visually appealing look for your bed. A lot of this will come down to personal preference. Opt for a variety of colors that complement each other and blend well with your bedroom decor.
Consider the mood you want to evoke in your space - serene and calming with soft blues and greens, or bold and dramatic with rich jewel tones. Take a look at my previous farmhouse bed with a bold, dark flair. I personally love a neutral color palette because it is a great way to have flexibility as styles change. Plus, neutrals go with everything! Keep in mind that you can easily incorporate a pop of color with a throw blanket or decorative pillows, just like I did here in my holiday bedding.
Selecting the right color palette sets the foundation for the rest of your bedding layers. As you master the art of selecting the perfect colors for your bedding, you'll be well on your way to creating a sleep sanctuary that's both stylish and comfortable.
Mixing Textures and Patterns
Next up, it's time to take your bed look to the next level by mixing different textures and patterns. By incorporating a variety of fabrics and designs together, you can add depth and visual interest to your bed, creating a luxurious and inviting feel.
Experiment with different combinations to find the perfect balance between cozy comfort and stylish flair. I personally love to have white sheets for my fitted sheet and top sheet. However, incorporating a subtle pattern into your solid flat sheet is a nice option too. Even with neutral comforters you can find different options that have subtle patterns or textures weaved into fabric. This is a great way to add style into a solid color scheme.
Stripes and linear designs are always a classic choice. And of course, don't forget that adding textures and patterns with your throw blankets and bed pillows is a way to incorporate design elements. Let's discuss that further below.
Layering with Throw Blankets and Decorative Pillows
To truly complete the look of your layered bedding, consider adding blankets and throw pillows to the mix. Throw blankets can introduce an extra layer of warmth and texture, while decorative pillows can inject personality and style. Mix and match different materials, colors, and patterns to create a cohesive and visually appealing bed ensemble that reflects your personal taste and design aesthetic.
For a king bed, I love to add three good quality euro shams in front of our sleeping pillows. These accent pillows are neutral white with simple texture for a finishing touch. You want your pillows to be able to hold shape. I add a karate chop in the middle to make it look more classy and high end. The euro size are followed by 2 smaller patterned pillows and one oblong or lumbar pillow to provide a focal point in the center.
I never go without adding bed blankets or a coverlet at the foot of the bed. This is the perfect place to add in an extra layer of design or a pop of color to tie your room together. Plus, you'll often find a cotton knit throw that is textured or has fun tassels for a fun visual effect.
With the addition of throw blankets and decorative pillows, you can elevate your bedding ensemble to a whole new level of sophistication and comfort, making your bedroom a true oasis of relaxation.
Layer Bedding with Different Textures
Experimenting with different textures is key to achieving a designer look with quality bedding. You don't want your bedding look to be exactly the same material and texture. Adding variety to a bed will provide an additional decorative element that is elegant and classy. Here are a few options to try:
- Combine silk sheets with a chunky knit throw
- Plush velvet decorative pillows with cotton bedding
- Faux fur accents for added depth and warmth
- Tasseled lightweight blanket or throw
- Ruffled edges
These various textures will not only make your bed visually appealing but also provide a sensory experience that adds to the overall comfort of your bedroom. A textured bed frame can add to this fun look too. Attention to detail and variety of textures will help you achieve a high-end look that is both inviting and stylish. Elevate your design even further by exploring the addition of a quilt to your bedding ensemble.
Adding a Quilt to Layer Bedding
To further enhance the luxurious and designer look of your layered bedding, consider adding a quilt. Though a quilt can sometimes be seen as old-fashioned and traditional, it can serve well as a focal point, adding a pop of color or pattern to your bedding layers. Choose a quilt that complements the textures and colors already present in your bedding, creating a cohesive and visually appealing look.
Additionally, a quilt is perfect for providing an extra layer of warmth during colder months while adding a touch of traditional charm to your bedroom decor. By incorporating a quilt into your bedding layering strategy, you can elevate the overall design of your space and create a cozy, inviting atmosphere that beckons you to unwind at the end of each day.
