DIY Easy Window Trim Ideas

Whether you have new windows or an older style, adding window trim can completely transform the rest of your house with a finished look. Let's take a look at these trim options to determine which trim project is a great choice for your home.

Choosing the Right Trim Style for Your Windows

When it comes to selecting the right trim style for around your window frame, it's essential to consider the overall aesthetic of your home. Whether you prefer a classic style or a more modern look for your window casing, there are a variety of different styles to choose from.

Factors such as the architecture of your home, the design of your interior, and your personal taste all play a role in selecting the perfect trim for your windows. As you explore different options, keep in mind how each style will complement the existing decor and enhance the overall look of your space. By choosing the right trim style, you can create a cohesive and harmonious design that adds charm and character to your home.

Here are just a few trim styles:

  • Craftsman - made of flat stock window trim, wider trim parts on top and bottom that extend slightly, clean lines and geometric
  • Ranch window trim - similar to flat stock but curved or angled
  • Fluted - lots of lines in trim, harder to clean but pretty details
  • Colonial - a little more detail than Craftsman involving subtle curves or minimal characterization, often using more than one piece to create a wider trim
  • Rustic - natural wood finishes or weathered textures
  • Farmhouse window- using shiplap or beadboard panels with simple casings

Deciding How to Paint Trim

Once you have picked the interior trim, then decide what color you want for the trim color. There are a few different options.

Our bonus room features a high contrast of color with a dark coat of paint on the wall and white trim paint. This is a beautiful look and makes the windows pop.

For our office space, we painted the interior window trim all the same color walls and ceiling. The window molding blends right in to the surrounding wall and creates a dramatic effect on the space.

Another option is to go with a low contrast. This uses the same color palette with a slightly different tone on tone. For our master bedroom, I used Chalked by Benjamin Moore for my moldings and Snowbound by Sherwin Williams for the white walls. This creates a cohesive look that is still elegant and detailed.

Tips for Creating Clean Lines and a Polished Look

For a polished and professional finish, it's important to pay attention to the details when installing trim. One key tip is to ensure clean lines by measuring carefully. This is an easy way to prevent uneven gaps or crooked edges that can detract from the overall look of your windows. Additionally, use a high-quality caulk to fill in gaps between the trim and the wall for a seamless appearance.

Taking the time to carefully sand, prime, and paint your trim will also contribute to a clean and polished look. By following these tips, you can achieve a refined finish in your trim details that enhances the overall charm of your home.

Creative Ideas for Window Sills and Trim Pieces

When it comes to adding charm and character to your home with DIY window trim projects, don't overlook the potential of incorporating creative ideas for window sills and trim pieces. Window sills provide the perfect opportunity to showcase decorative items such as plants, candles, or framed photos, adding a personalized touch to your space.

How We Installed Flat Stock Window Trim

When we were building our house we took on the project of doing all of our home's window trim. It was a big job, but I am glad we did it. Instead of having sheetrock wrapped around to the window, we had them just come to the edge.

We then added a MDF window seal for a couple reasons.

  1. Aesthetic - this type of seal looks nicer with modern styles.
  2. Doing this allowed us to square up the window. If the window framing is not square we can use shims to square it up, but this makes adding flat trim around the windows easier.

Next, we added 3 ½" casing to the bottom with a 45 degree angle on each side.

Place the casing down a little from the top of the window seal. This creates what is called a reveal and it looks so nice and clean.

Now add the casing to the sides of the window. Cut the bottom edge at a 45 degree angle and the top edge straight. Add one to each side.

Tip: make sure to measure both sides so you get the perfect measurements and cuts.

Once both sides are on for the interior window casings, it is time to create the header. For my header I used a 7" wide MDF header and then used a 1 ½" piece for the top. To attach them, nail from the top down. I found it easiest to build the header on the ground and then lift it into place.

Experimenting with unique trim pieces such as geometric shapes or intricate designs can make a bold statement and enhance the overall aesthetic of your windows. It's amazing how your living room can be brought to life with window trim.

Elevating Your Home's Exterior with Stylish Trim

You can also add curb appeal to the outside of your house by adding exterior window trim. I used the same interior style trim on our exterior trim. Even though we chose black windows, we kept the trim white to match the home exterior paint color.

The encasement adds a beautiful visual appeal to the rest of the house. If you are looking to add architectural detail to your exterior, this is a budget friendly option that pays off.
