DIY Yarn Christmas Trees
I decided to keep these yarn trees as neutral-themed decor, opting for a calm, natural color palette that would easily blend with any holiday decor. To add depth and interest, I focused on incorporating different textures rather than bold colors.
A mix of chenille, faux fur, and fleck yarn are perfect choices, each bringing a unique look to the trees. The chenille adds a soft, velvety touch. The faux fur brings in cozy warmth, and the fleck yarn adds a subtle, speckled detail that ties it all together beautifully. These textures make the neutral trees feel inviting and layered, perfect for a cozy holiday display.
Supplies Needed
- Styrofoam trees - 24", 18", 12"
- Chenille yarn
- Faux fur yarn
- Fleck yarn
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue
Keep in mind that you don't have to choose the same style or color of yarn that I used. There are many different options that you can find in differing textures or colors.
How to Make DIY Yarn Christmas Trees
Secure Yarn at the Base
Begin your yarn-wrapped Christmas tree by securing the yarn at the base of the styrofoam cone. Apply a small dot of hot glue to the very bottom edge of the cone. Then, press the end of your yarn into the glue, holding it for a few seconds until it sets.
Secure the First Layer
Once the yarn is attached, start wrapping it snugly around the bottom of the cone. I find that it is very helpful to add a thin line of hot glue along the base, every inch or so as you go. This helps to make sure the first layer is firmly in place. Make sure to do this initial step to ensure that the yarn won't slip or unravel from the bottom over time.
Wrap and Glue
After securing the base layer, continue wrapping the yarn upward around the tree form. For a smooth, even look, keep the yarn taut, but not overly tight. Every few times around the tree, stop and add a dot of hot glue to anchor the yarn to the cone, which will help maintain your work as you move toward the top.
Helpful Hint: This step is especially important if you're working with softer or more textured yarns that may otherwise shift out of place.
Repeat Process for Each Tree
Repeat this process for each type of yarn you’re using, whether it’s a different color, thickness, or texture, to add variety and depth to your tree.
This layering of textures and colors will give your DIY trees a unique and cozy look that’s perfect for the holiday season!
Once you’ve wrapped your last strand of yarn and secured it, step back and admire your handiwork! These yarn-wrapped Christmas trees are a festive addition to any room whether displayed on a mantel, clustered together as a centerpiece, or placed alongside your favorite holiday decor.
