Velvet ornaments

Brighten up your holiday tree with these beautiful and homemade velvet Christmas ornaments. An easy project that anyone can do!

Create a stunning Christmas decoration with this DIY velvet ornament tutorial. With minimal effort and a few craft supplies, you can make beautiful and unique velvet Christmas ornaments that will look gorgeous on your tree.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know for making your own velvet ornaments—from finding the perfect supplies to creating the finished product. With detailed instructions and photos, you'll be crafting your own DIY Christmas ornaments in no time.

Supplies Needed

  • Glass ornaments
  • Acrylic paint - spray paint or regular craft paint. For good end results, make sure to pick a paint that matches with your flocking powder. They should be similar colors, but don't need to be exact.
  • Modge Podge
  • Craft paint brush
  • Craft foam brush - works best for Modge Podge
  • Flocking Powder - I ordered mine through Etsy.
  • Paper plate
  • String, twine or ribbon for hanging ornament

Making DIY Velvet Christmas Ornaments

These (mostly) homemade ornaments are super cute and a great way to cut down on the additional cost of brand new ornaments. And while I love the look of velvet material ornaments with pieces of fabric, I don't love the expense. These faux velvet, DIY flocked ornaments are an easy solution to achieving the velvet look for less.

Paint Your Ornaments

First step, paint your ornament. My ornaments are glass, but clear plastic ornaments can also work. I have found it is easiest to paint your ornaments when you have a work surface that allows you to prop up the whole ornament. This will also assist in painting the top and bottom of the ornament at the same time.

Before applying paint, I like to put my ornaments on a board with dowels. You can also use a peg board or place skewer sticks into styrofoam.

Apply acrylic craft paint to your ornament exterior. There are a couple different ways to do this. Either apply paint with a small paint brush or you can spray your Christmas tree ornaments with acrylic spray paint.

Spray paint may enable you to get a better job of paint coverage, but hand painting will also work. If you use a brush, make sure to use multiple coats so that when light shines through you don't see the brush strokes. I applied two coats and could see some brush strokes through the paint. Allow time for your paint to dry before moving on to the next step.

Use Modge Podge

When your handmade ornaments are dry, grab a foam brush and a container of Modge Podge. Lightly cover the ornament with a layer of Modge Podge. Make sure that it isn't dripping off the glass or you will have difficulty with the next step. Do not let your glue dry before applying your flocking powder.

Add Flocking to Make Velvet Christmas Ornaments

Next, it's time to add your flocking powder. Do this step over a paper plate. While your glass is still wet from the craft glue, dump your flocking powder over the top of the ornament and firmly pat it into the glue with a separate brush or your fingers. Roll the whole thing around in the flocking powder on the plate until it is well covered.

Lightly tap the ornament to remove any extra flocking powder, then allow your DIY ornaments time to dry. When the flocked ornaments have dried, you will find a beautiful velvet ornament lookalike.

I do not suggest using a craft spray to seal it because it can change the texture too much. However, if you want to apply some kind of protective coating you can lightly mist the exterior with hairspray. Just make sure to allow enough time to dry so the outside isn't sticky. I did not use any spray on the exterior of these faux velvet Christmas ornaments.

Final Touches

When your ornament is ready, attach the top cap piece back on. To hang, I prefer to use ribbon or twine instead of a hook. It looks much more classy and elegant. You can even go all out with a velvet ribbon too.

I find that I lose too many hooks that are easily stepped on (ouch) or sucked up in the vacuum. If you are a traditional hook user, I strongly suggest trying this new method instead!
