How to Make a DIY Ornament Tree
Looking to make cute new decor for your home this year? Follow along as I share this easy step-by-step tutorial with you.
But don't miss this other fun tree decoration that is homemade!
Gather Your Supplies
- Wood for the base - 2" wide x 17 ½" long
- 30 ornaments - option #2
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue
- Fairy lights (a shorter strand will work just fine)
To get started on this creative project, gather your supplies. You will need a variety of ornaments in all the same sizes, coordinated colors, and textures. I like ornaments that complement my existing decor or current holiday theme.
Start Assembling Your DIY Ornament Tree
Now that you have all your ornaments selected and ready to go, it's time to start assembling your tree.
First, get your tree base ready. You don't need a smaller piece like I used, but since I wanted my tree to be a little more elevated, I glued on a smaller piece of wood to my wood base. If you don't care about that, you can proceed with glueing your ornaments directly onto the base.
One other option is the paint your base. I absolutely love the natural wood, but if you want a little color, it's a super easy piece to paint.
Begin attaching your ornaments one by one, starting from the bottom and working your way up. Use hot glue to secure each ornament in place, making sure they are evenly spaced out and balanced on the DIY ornament tree.
Your ornaments will end up in a pyramid shape, just like below.
Once all of your ornaments are in place, wait for a bit to make sure everything is solidified and staying in place. Then you can move on to adding the finishing touches to complete your unconventional Christmas decor masterpiece.
Add the Finishing Touches
As you add the finishing touches to your unconventional Christmas tree, consider incorporating strands of twinkling lights to enhance the overall festive aesthetic. Opt for white, colored, or even novelty lights to complement your unique ornament choices and create a magical glow.
Wind your strand along each row of ornaments like I did. You can also weave a light strand through the ornament pockets.
Showcase Your Masterpiece
Once your DIY ornament tree is illuminated, step back and admire your masterpiece. You can also complement the tree with coordinating accents such as garlands, wreaths, and other decorative elements to create a cohesive and festive atmosphere throughout your space.
Here a few fun ideas for how to decorate with this piece:
- Use as a table centerpiece for your Christmas dining table or on a side buffet table
- Place on your fireplace mantel
- Style on a coffee table with Christmas garlands
- Kids craft for a bedroom or bathroom
Take the time to appreciate the creativity and individuality that went into curating your unconventional Christmas tree, and let it serve as a reflection of your unique style. If you love the DIY decor options, these DIY Christmas sugar snow globes are a fun activity too!
Want to do something a little different? I painted this tree base and added my homemade velvet ornaments to the mix. I also made these DIY painted ornaments, if that is more your style.
You can see the variety between choosing ornaments that are colored, versus a theme that is more neutral. I really love both! It all depends on what will look best with your existing Christmas decorations.
