From building a cozy reading corner to creating a gallery wall with their favorite things, there’s something here for every style and budget.
Create a Gallery Wall with Their Favorite Things
A gallery wall is a great way to make your child’s bedroom feel extra special. Instead of sticking to framed art alone, mix in things that reflect their interests and personality

Things I like to Include:
- their own drawings
- photos
- posters
- favorite quotes
- First letter on their name
- mix and match frames
- 3D items - like butterflies
- their initial
- something they have made - dream catcher

How to Decorate a Large Empty Wall
Decorating a large wall in a kid's bedroom is a great opportunity to add personality, texture, and visual interest to the space. Start with a statement piece like a large wood map.
This map has been so fun for little buddy. It came with pins so he can mark where he has been. It's both educational and stylish, giving the room a warm, earthy feel while inspiring curiosity about the world.

To add softness and dimension, consider using macramé wall hangings. I love the texture they add to a space. We also incorporated woven baskets on either side of the macrame. Actually these are not the expensive baskets you see all over the place.

They are inexpensive woven placemats that we painted and added yarn to. This combination of elements creates a playful yet elevated look that can grow with your child over time.
Build Simple DIY Shelving for Style & Storage
Shelving doesn’t have to be boring! Wooden shelves are an easy weekend project and can totally change the look and function of the space. Use them to display books, collectibles, or favorite toys—making everything feel organized and stylish. This can be a great DIY project or you can buy them here.

I had a whole wall to fill out in my daughters room so I took the shelves a little further and I created a 4'x8' pegboard with movable shelves so my daughter could customize it how she wanted.

Not in a DIY mood? That is works too. Buying a piece of furniture with shelves is a great option too.

Build a Custom Bed (Yes, You Can!)
If you're up for a slightly bigger DIY project, building a simple bed frame can be surprisingly doable—and incredibly rewarding.
I used reclaimed wood to build this bed for my daughter. You can see the full tutorial here. It was surprisingly easier than I thought. It might make you feel even better to know this is the first piece of furniture I built. It lasted through my oldest daughter and son!

If you want to get a little more complicated how about building a bunk bed. This bed was so much fun to build and my son absolutely loves it. Full tutorial here.

Add Wallpaper or a Feature Wall
Wallpaper is back—and it’s perfect for kids' rooms! Choose something playful like stars, animals, or soft florals. If wallpaper feels too permanent, peel-and-stick options are widely available and easy to change as your child grows.

If you are still against small print wallpaper think big and try out a mural. This dark mural makes a big fun impact in my daughters room and can grow with her through the years.

Not ready for wallpaper? How about a feature wall. You can keep is simple with a bold color to ground the room and add dimension. Or you can go one step further and add some molding to really add some personality and texture.
Refinish a Desk or Dresser
Give an old piece of furniture new life with a simple refinish. This was my husbands desk when we was a kid. It used to be a orange oak color. Which didn't go with our color scheme. We fixed that by sanding it down, bleaching the oak and painting it a fun color.

When refinishing furniture the sky is the limit on color. I went with a bubble gum pink and add some white to accent the fun details on the dresser. This is a great way to add character to the room while keeping your budget in check.

Make a Cozy Reading Corner
Every kid deserves a cozy little spot to curl up with a book. Create a reading nook with a floor cushion or beanbag, a soft rug, and a basket of their favorite stories. Hang some string lights or stars overhead to make it extra magical.

If your kids are a bit older, like mine. You can still elevate their space with a more refined and cozy setup. To do that I added a comfortable accent chair paired with a small footstool. A side table is a great touch for holding their favorite books, snacks, or even a stylish lamp.

To make the space truly their own, hang a few pieces of personalized wall decor, such as framed art, photos, or inspirational quotes that reflect their personality and interests.

Don’t Forget the Personal Touches
What makes a kid’s room truly special is when it reflects them. Hang their artwork, include a letter board with their favorite sayings, or let them help pick out fabrics and colors.

These little choices help them feel ownership over their space—and that’s where the real magic happens.

Bringing It All Together
Decorating your child’s bedroom doesn’t have to be expensive or overwhelming. With a few thoughtful DIY projects and creative design touches, you can transform the space into something warm, fun, and completely personalized.
Whether you’re building a custom bed or hanging up their favorite drawings, the most important thing is to make it a space where they feel happy, safe, and at home.
Happy Decorating,
Brooke
