How to Create a DIY Flocked Tree
Before we get to our flock tree decorating, let's talk about how to actually flock a Christmas tree. (At least if you don't plan on purchasing one already flocked.) There are a few different ways to achieve this flocked look that aren't hard. In fact, flocking is super easy, but it is also VERY messy.
Supplies to Flock Your Own Tree
- Flocking powder - for my 7 foot pencil tree I used about 5 lbs
- Plastic sheet or disposable party table cover
- Spray bottle
- Warm water
- Dust mask
- Strainer
Prep Work
Because flocking can be so messy, it is easiest to do this project outside and then have someone help you move it indoors. But if you would rather do it in your interior, just make sure everything around you is covered. I highly recommend laying out plastic that you can just throw away when you are done.
If your tree comes apart in pieces, this can be easier to flock it in layered sections if you want to get more snow in specific places.
Spray Tree With Water
First, grab a spray bottle and spray your tree with water. You don't want to soak it. Just spray enough so that it is damp.
Add Flocking
Next, it's time to add the flock powder. I really like using this powder because it allows more control over how much of a snowy look you want. And it does go farther than a spray can of flocking if you have a large tree. Pour the flocking into your strainer and begin to shake it over the tree. You will also spray the powder with your spray bottle as the powder is falling.
As the flocking gets wet it will start to stick to the tree. If there is an area that needs a little more flocking, spray some more water on the branches and shake flocking over it again.
The amount of flocking you use really will depend on how large your tree is and how much of a snow look you want. If you only want a light frosting, you won't need as much.
Final Spray With Water
After the tree is covered with the desired amount of snow, use your spray bottle to mist it with water one last time and allow it to dry and seal. Once my tree was dried, I added hair spray over the top to help the flocking stay. This step is optional. Be careful of where you put your tree if you add hair spray, because it is flammable.
You can use this flocking on so many things! Add it to your trees, wreaths, garlands, pinecones and berries. If you want to create only a partially snow-capped tree, try inserting flocked branches, flocked pinecones or even lightly frosted garland. Then, accent with white ornaments and decor to pull in more of that color.
If DIY flocking isn't in your foreseeable future, there are large and small options to purchase some cute trees that are already flocked for you. Shop a mini flocked version here.
Easy Flocked Christmas Tree Decorating
Looking to turn that classic evergreen into a beautiful Christmas tree? Let's take a peek through my own tree ideas over the years to inspire your personal winter wonderland.
Flocked Christmas Tree in Neutral and Green
For the pre-lit tree in my living room, I opted to stay with a green and neutral color palette by pulling in natural elements. This is a beautiful color scheme to compliment a flocked tree because it pulls in all of the natural green coloring of the tree and looks fabulous against a white wall.
When emphasizing the underlying green tones, begin by adding in eucalyptus stems and green ribbon tied into bows. This breaks up the texture of the tree branches as well as adding in different shades of green. You can also add other garland or stems of greenery that are not eucalyptus, but I prefer the soft leaf appearance of the eucalyptus.
We added in complimentary neutral shades of gold and white too. Gold is a good neutral base that compliments any color. I incorporated a gold theme using gold ornaments and gold bead strands weaved through the branches.
If you are wanting something with more of a shimmer, make these easy DIY metallic ornaments. These Rub n' Buff homemade ornaments are simple to create and add just the right amount of sparkle that reflects against the strand of lights.
Flocked Tree in a Dark Room
Flocked white trees are perfect for a dark room or wall. I just love the elegant look of the faux snow against the dark charcoal paint in our office. When placed against a dark background, the flocked tree stands out as a bright focal point and creates a beautiful juxtaposition of color for the overall look.
But it's also a great idea to add a bit of warmth to the contrasting color combinations. Beautiful ways to do this are by adding wooden beads and a wooden star to the white decorations. This ties in nicely to the other natural wood elements in this small space.
Unique Pop of Color in a White Tree
Don't be afraid to go bold with your flocked tree. The artificial snow is perfect for choosing to accent with a bright pop of color because white can go with anything. Be unique and choose a fun color that you love.
We chose to accent my daughter's faux tree in a beautiful bright pink and gold for a magical look in her bedroom. Smaller trees like this one are perfect for bedrooms. We used pink and gold flowers with ornaments to match.
And did you know you can use a basket for a tree collar substitute? It's perfect for a smaller tree. The natural wood tones in the basket compliment the gold hues quite well. Take a look here for some other tree skirt options that won't break the bank AND will make your tree look amazing.
Flocked Christmas Tree Decorating in White
When decorating a flocked tree for the first time, you might think that it is impossible to incorporate a white color scheme. Not so! White Christmas tree decorations look especially classy on flocked greenery. This is because you can get a variety of textures with different white ornaments. Throw in white ribbon or garland and that's even better for adding dimension!
I did also add in a pop of color with some red berries. A few ornaments helped to add variety as well as the adorable buffalo check ribbon. Ribbon is fun because it can be used going vertical or horizontal. Look here for more ribbon styling.
However, the bright white is brilliant and stunning against the white wall. And don't forget to include awesome Christmas tree toppers to the top of the tree to complete the look. Learn to make a tree topper here!
Leave Flocked Christmas Tree Natural
You can still achieve a gorgeous tree with a natural look too. For this flocked tree in our bedroom, I left it natural without any ornaments. This emphasizes the naturalism and beauty of traditional Christmas trees.
If you are looking to focus on simplicity, this option it a good one. I love being able to enjoy a classic snow-covered tree without all of the decor in place. It definitely is a great reminder that simplicity and minimalism are just as beautiful as a tree decked out in glossy finishes.
Decorating a flocked Christmas tree can be a great way to add a fresh, modern twist to your holiday decor. The natural beauty of the flocked branches can stand alone, or you can create some truly stunning displays with the help of a few carefully chosen decorations. Make sure to start with a tree in good condition, flock it if needed, and choose decorations that fit your aesthetic. Taking the time to do this will help ensure you have a festive and beautiful addition to your decor this holiday season.
Happy Decorating!
