If you’re looking for a fun, budget-friendly Halloween project, these DIY tomato cage witches are an absolute must! They’re simple to make, use supplies you probably already have around the house, and they add the perfect touch of spooky charm to your porch or yard.

I made mine in just a couple of hours, and I can honestly say, they might be the cutest witches I’ve ever seen. Let me walk you through the steps so you can create your own.
What You’ll Need:
- A tomato cage
- A round ball for the head (large ornament, foam ball, or anything lightweight and round)
- Black fabric (about 4 yards total—I used two 2-yard pieces)
- Black tulle (also two 2-yard pieces)
- Jute string
- A witch hat
- Scissors
How to Make a DIY Tomato Cage Witch
Step 1: Build the Witch’s Frame
Flip your tomato cage upside down so the wide part is on the ground and the prongs point upward. Gather the prongs together and attach your ball securely to create the “head.” If the ball keeps popping off use a zip tie to hold the prongs together. (I used a large ornament I found in my basement, but a foam ball works perfectly too.)

Step 2: Add the Fabric
Drape your black fabric over the cage, making sure it reaches all the way to the ground. You have two options here:
- Option 1: Sew the two fabric pieces together along the long edge for a smooth cloak.
- Option 2: Simply overlap the pieces when draping—you won’t even notice the cage underneath.

Step 3: Add the Tulle Layer
Lay the tulle over the black fabric for that extra witchy texture. I used two pieces again but didn’t bother sewing them, just draped them naturally over the fabric.

Step 4: Define the Head
Take a piece of jute string and tie it around the base of the ball “head.” This gives the witch more shape and separates the head from the flowing cloak.

Step 5: Top It Off with a Witch Hat
No witch is complete without her hat! Pop a pointed witch hat on top, and you’re done.

Decorating Your Porch with Witches
Once your witch is finished, it’s time to display her! I set mine on the front porch, and to make sure she doesn’t blow away, I tucked a few heavy rocks at the bottom of the cage for weight.

To finish off the look, I surrounded the witches with black and white pumpkins and a couple of glowing jack-o’-lanterns. The mix of textures and colors really pulls the whole spooky scene together and makes your porch the star of the neighborhood on Halloween night.
Happy DIYing
