Why Choose a Hot Chocolate Charcuterie?
When it comes to hosting for the holidays, charcuterie boards are definitely the way to go for ease and lack of dish clean up. I also love them because you can get really creative in your customizing for guests. You might include different items for kids that you wouldn't for adults. Plus, it's really easy to tie in a holiday theme with your food.
Any drink lovers around? A hot cocoa charcuterie is unique because it's for drinks instead of the usual food munchies or appetizers. I like that it can be simple and serve a crowd. A themed hot chocolate board can easily be used at holiday office parties, for church youth gatherings or at any family get-togethers. There is nothing better than a delicious cup of hot cocoa when you are freezing your britches outside.

Easy Hot Cocoa Charcuterie Board
First up, choose what type of board or tray you would like to use. I chose a simple round wooden board for my charcuterie, but you can really choose any tray or snack board that you have. There are even add to the holiday fun with festive themed charcuterie boards that can be really cute.
Types of Hot Cocoa
For your own hot cocoa board, you'll want to decide what type of hot chocolate to serve. This can impact whether you choose to create a charcuterie board with only the toppings, or if you want to include the hot chocolate mix too.
A few different options are:
- Buy large containers of cocoa mix (flavored or regular) and put them in small serving bowls with a spoon
- Put individual Swiss Miss packets in a stylish container
- Put out a slow cooker with hot cocoa already pre-made and allow guests to serve themselves.
I decided to combine my cocoa and toppings together by placing the hot chocolate mixes into separate white serving bowls. Then I placed them on the charcuterie board and filled in with toppings and treats.
Topping and Treat Fillers
Fill in the empty space with any toppings that you love. I used one other small serving bowl for peppermint bits, but also included a few candy canes as well to stir with. Some people love to dip cookies into their hot chocolate, so I made sure to include Oreos and white chocolate pretzels for a bit of salty and sweet.
Fluffy marshmallows are pretty great, but if you lack the space on your tray, mini dehydrated marshmallows are the next best thing. A few hot cocoa bombs and chocolate spoons are delicious for those who have a particular sweet tooth. And if you don't want to take the time to add in all the toppings, throw in a chocolate bomb with hot milk or water and you're good to go.
I completed the tray with a selection of Hershey kisses in different flavors. This is a fun way to incorporate a few more flavor combinations - mint and chocolate, cherry and chocolate, caramel and chocolate, just to name a few.
Additional Hot Chocolate Items
There is a lot of room for creativity as far as toppings for your hot cocoa charcuterie. Here are just a few other options to consider when coming up with your own hot cocoa creations.
- Spices - Consider throwing in a selection of cinnamon sticks, plain cinnamon or nutmeg for those who don't love their cocoa as sweet
- Chocolate chips or white chocolate chips for those who love it with extra chocolate
- Sauces - caramel sauce or chocolate syrup
- Flavor syrups - Add some flavoring to your drink with some fun festive syrups. We love to use these when making steamed milk and hot cocoa is no different. Hazelnut, caramel and coconut are a few favorites around here.
- Coconut flakes
- Andes mints
- Holiday sprinkles
- Whipped cream - You can easily set up a can of whipped cream on ice with a bowl and a bag of ice.
If you have the counter or table space and want to go all out, another option is to create a hot chocolate bar like this one. A large table spread like this cocoa bar is ideal for a really big group, or if you simply want to include a larger variety of toppings and extra food.
