Learn the best methods for cleaning your rugs at home, from routine maintenance to deep cleaning tips.
Rugs can add warmth, style, and comfort to any room—but over time, they also collect dirt, odors, and debris that regular vacuuming just can’t handle. If your rugs are looking a little tired, it might be time for a deep clean. The good news? You don’t need to take them to a professional cleaner. With a little time and effort, you can bring your rugs back to life right at home using a power washer.

Here’s a simple, effective method to make your rugs look (and smell) as good as new:
Supplies You'll Need:
- A large rug (or several)
- Carpet shampoo (power washer–safe)
- Power washer
- Access to a hard, flat surface (like a driveway or patio)
- Rubber squeegee
- Hose (for rinsing, if needed)
- Outdoor drying space (flat or with a railing/fence to hang the rug)
- Carpet powder deodorizer
- Vacuum cleaner
Step 1: Take the Rug Outside
Choose a hard, flat surface like a driveway, patio, or sidewalk to clean your rug. Make sure the area has good drainage and won't be damaged by water or soap runoff.
Step 2: Load the Power Washer
Fill your power washer with carpet shampoo—many home improvement stores carry formulas designed specifically for this. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for mixing ratios and machine compatibility.
Step 3: Spray the Back First
Start by power washing the back side of the rug. This step is crucial because it helps push deep-seated dirt and grime up and out through the fibers. Give it a thorough rinse to loosen hidden debris.
Step 4: Flip & Wash the Front
Next, flip the rug over and power wash the top side. Take your time, working in sections to ensure every fiber gets a good clean. You’ll likely see years of dirt wash away right before your eyes.
Step 5: Squeegee the Excess
After washing, use a rubber squeegee to remove dirty water and soap. This step not only speeds up drying but also lifts away remaining grime that’s been loosened during the wash.
Step 6: Dry Thoroughly
Let the rug dry in the sun. You can lay it flat or hang it over a railing or fence after the majority of the water has been squeegeed out. Just be sure the rug is fully dry before bringing it back inside to prevent mildew.
If you’d like to take advantage of your empty space to clean the tile and grout underneath, I’ve shared my favorite tool and step-by-step process here to help make your grout look like new again.
Step 7: Freshen Up
Once the rug is dry and back in your home, sprinkle a carpet powder deodorizer over the surface for a fresh, clean scent. Let it sit for about 15 minutes.
Step 8: Vacuum & Enjoy
Finish up by vacuuming the rug to remove the powder and lift the pile. Your rug should now be fresh, fluffy, and looking like new.
A Fresh Start Underfoot
Deep cleaning your rugs doesn’t have to mean expensive services or renting equipment. With just a few household tools and a power washer, you can restore your rugs to their former glory right in your driveway. It's a satisfying project that not only improves the look of your space but also helps keep your home cleaner and more inviting.
Happy cleaning!
