Styling Front Door Christmas Decorations
I love to decorate my porch for Christmas. There are a lot of different routes to take when it comes to outdoor Christmas decorations. But in my opinion, the best way to invite the spirit of the season is to choose a theme where you can incorporate natural elements mixed with classic holiday decor.
Porch and Front Door Decorations
Here are several options that work really well for creating a festive grand entrance.
- Fresh greenery
- Faux or fresh garland
- Christmas trees
- Red ribbons
- Pine cones
- Christmas lights - twinkling fairy lights or traditional
- Front porch mat - holiday themed
- Christmas wreaths
- White or red berries
- Evergreen branches or faux branches
- Bows
- Christmas flowers - like red poinsettias or mistletoe
- Accent ornaments
- Christmas bells
Statement Piece on Your Door
Whether you have double doors like mine or a single one, creating a focal point on your door is a great way to spruce up your festivity factor. Christmas door decorations are the first thing your visitors see, so it's fun to add a statement piece that emphasizes a bit of holiday spirit.
A front door wreath is always a great choice for your exterior door, especially when you mix natural elements with a bit of classic style in evergreen wreaths. However, you can also go with a store-bought wreath that does not include greenery and instead might use metal or wood elements.
My first choice is a traditional wreath made of greenery. You can never go wrong with a classic Christmas look like this. A traditional evergreen wreath can easily be customized too with berries, bows, pinecones, ornaments and even adding your own DIY flocking if you love a frosted appearance. These wreaths on my doors are real. I got them from Lynch Farm. They have the best real wreaths and lots of variety to choose from.
Not up for a front door wreath? Try adding a holiday sign or welcome sign that you can customize. Just keep in mind that whatever you choose to hang on your front door, it will see some weather elements at this time of year.

Use Garland for Front Door Christmas Decorations Around the Door Frame
Another festive option is to decorate around your door frame. This can be done with a single door or double door frame. Again, my preference is to incorporate some traditional greenery garland because of its classic beauty.
I bought this real garland from Costco. I used two on the door and then cut the remaining garland off to put in my chandelier above the entry. But you can also use faux garland which I also have.
Garlands are an easy way to add simple decor that smells great. And you can accessorize your garland just like your wreath. Add small strands of lights or bows for holiday accents. Garlands are also perfect for framing your doorway and drawing more attention to the entrance, which is the goal in creating an elegant front door!
Create Holiday Flower Pots
You can create elegant front door Christmas decorations with your flower pots too. By this time of year, most flower pots are empty or put away from the summer season. However, you can make use of that barren plant holder with just a few items!
Turn your empty planters into baskets of winter greenery that compliment your front door. You can do this with leftover garland or branches that you have on hand. I added in greenery, pinecones, flocked berries and some solid wood branches. This classic beauty is always an elegant addition.
These items below create the same look. You can shop them below.
I also love the idea of using additional home decor in your planters. If your planter area is quite large, why not also add in an outdoor decorative lantern with a faux light, a battery-powered candle, red holiday flowers or additional bright lights amidst the greenery? Feel free to get super creative in designing the perfect holiday flower pot display.
Accent Greens With a Pop of Color
Remember to add a bit of color to really celebrate with an eye-catching pop. A bright use of color will make your front door look like a beautiful statement piece, especially if it is paired with a neutral color scheme.
I wanted to add a pop of vibrancy to the garland so I added these large Christmas ornaments to the corner and these fun bells. They are both classic Christmas elements and when paired with the greenery it sings elegance. If you want to add a bold color to your neutral palette, this is a great way to do it.
You can see in my other front porch exterior design below that instead of bright ornaments, I opted for a set of beautiful red Christmas bells. Whatever you use to add a pop color, make sure that it can handle outdoor temperature and weather.
Use Additional Accent Lighting
Whether it's hanging lights like these amazing starburst lights or twinkling strands, adding an element of mood lighting is perfect for creating beautiful ambiance on your porch. The soft glow is ideal for creating an atmosphere of warmth on those cold winter nights.
And if you have the option to have a permanent fixture of light above your doorway entrance, I highly suggest going with a decorative light like this chandelier. It adds stunning texture and style to the space, illuminating the path up to the front door.
Expand Beyond Your Front Door Christmas Decorations
Other easy ways to incorporate front door decor ideas are by expanding your decorative space beyond the door. Don't think that you only have to keep your decor to the door. If you have any room on your porch it is ok to spread out your holiday decorations. When you do this it makes your porch feel so much bigger, but also draws even more of a focal point to the front exterior of your home.
I love to add small faux trees in different baskets and pots to help fill the space. The side of the front door is the perfect area to incorporate a few more classic Christmas items.
I love a variety of sizes of trees, but mini trees are especially handy when your porch or door space is small.
Christmas decorations are an essential part of the holiday season. By adding an elegant touch to your front door, you can create a memorable and inviting entryway for your family, friends, and neighbors. Whether you choose traditional décor or opt for something more modern and innovative, front door Christmas decorations can help spread cheer and bring joy to your home.
This holiday season, take the time to add that special something to your front door to make sure you and your loved ones have a warm and cozy welcome. After all, the front door is the first impression you give to all of your holiday guests. So let's make it a joyful one.
Happy Decorating!
