Easily improve your home for less cost by adding bedroom curtains to change up your space.
One of the easiest and low cost ways to add style to your home is by adding the right curtains to your windows. At first glance you may think you only need to have shades or blinds for window treatments. I originally opted for reverse roller shades that sit inside the window frame. While this can help with blocking light, there is also a vacant sense of style that impacts the rest of the room. Incorporating curtains into your home brings an affordable wow factor to any living space, including a bedroom or living room.
How to Choose Curtains for a Room
There are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to picking out the perfect curtains for your bedroom. Keep this tips in mind as you think about your bedroom space and the atmosphere you want to create.
ADDED WARMTH
Tip: Choose bedroom curtains that will bring warmth to your space.
Curtains can easily bring warmth to any space. Our keeping room is one of my favorite rooms in our home because of the large window. While I love that this room is so bright and welcoming, the window takes up the majority of the wall causing a lack of warmth in the space. This can lead to a living space that is cold and uninviting.
Once I installed the linen curtains it made a world of difference! The curtains soften the space and the room in general has a cozy warmth. And you don't need to go with bold patterns or bright colors to achieve a warm atmosphere. This curtain color is pretty neutral and fits the soft color scheme of the room better.
A POP OF COLOR IN BEDROOM CURTAINS
Tip: Use your curtains to bring in a pop of color.
Another way curtains are useful is by adding to a color palette or incorporating patterns into the room. Since my keeping room window was a completely white wall color, I didn't want any type of sheer curtains that would get washed out. But the light gray solid-colored curtains create the perfect balance. You can never go wrong with neutral colors.
Bringing in additional textures or color with curtains is ideal for breaking up the monotony of a solid wall color and creating visual interest. I also added in this abstract artwork to pull out the gray tones in the curtains.
You can see how the curtains in my daughter's room display a pop of color and change the atmosphere of the room. While I didn't want to use complete blackout curtains, we did choose darker curtain fabric to block out the direct sunlight that comes in with these bedroom windows. Plus, they are an excellent choice for balancing out her busy wallpaper mural.
ADDED ELEGANCE
Tip: Choose curtains that will help create an elegant atmosphere.
What more could you want for than a beautiful and luxurious space in your master bedroom? Curtains naturally create a high end style factor when they are floor-length curtains and slightly touch the floor. Avoid short curtains that are window length only. Curtains are also more elegant when they are wrinkle free and hung using a curtain rod and this trick - curtain pins.
Choose curtains that will add to the elegance of your room, not take it away. This can also be something very simple as avoiding wild patterns and sticking with a classic look. My best advice is to embrace curtain designs that are neutral or have subtle geometric patterns.
You can see my luxury master bedroom below. At first, we only used roller shades instead of incorporating any bedroom curtain ideas. While this is a great way to keep windows simple, the space was missing something.
And you can see how much more elegance is added to the room with these soft furnishings. Curtains can add so much to a bedroom design. We still have a large amount of natural light that comes in, but the curtains provide just enough elegance to and color to break up the white.
BEDROOM CURTAIN OPTIONS
Tip: Explore the different styles to find what you really love.
Curtains can come in varying styles. It's important to know what kind of curtain styles you like. Here are a few popular choices:
- Grommet - curtains have circular openings lined in metal that slide easily on a rod.
- Pinch Pleats - a classic style with thin folds in fabric overlapping.
- Rod Pocket - curtain panels that have a hole sewn through the top to conceal a rod.
- Tab Top - loops of fabric at the top of the curtain that slip over the rod. Rod is still seen.
- Ripplefold - curtains that have a consistent wave and are usually on a track.
And don't forget, there are a lot of fabric options too, from sheer fabrics to velvet curtains and everything in between.
Benefits of Bedroom Curtains
FRAMING STYLE AROUND THE WINDOW
Curtains provide style because they can also act as a frame around the window, regardless of whether or not there is molding. (I am a huge advocate of molding - my husband spent many hours encasing our windows with it.) Since the molding tends to blend into the window, the addition of curtains frames the window wall. This draws the focal point to the window.
REDUCE SOUND AND ECHOING
There is nothing worse than noisy kids in the outside vicinity when you are trying to enjoy some peace and quiet. Hanging up that set of curtains will provide more than just an appealing focal point. Curtains can help to reduce sound waves by absorbing the noise as well as muffling echos and vibrations. They won't completely remove all noise, but they at least will provide a barrier that minimizes sound waves.
Heavy fabric is best. Blackout drapes or something similar in weight would be an ideal choice.
EFFICIENT HEATING AND COOLING
Having decor that can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system is well worth the decorating effort! While curtains can help to act as a sound barrier, they can also aid in heat retention. Heavy fabric will act as a barrier and block heat from escaping.
PRIVACY
Here is an obvious factor when considering investing in curtains. Privacy! Decorating aside, I don't love it when people can see into my windows at night. A good set of curtain panels can easily prevent peeping visitors from peering into your home. Plus, curtains are pretty helpful at blocking out unwanted light for watching a movie, etc.
AFFORDABLE DECOR
Contrary to popular opinion, curtains are very affordable. These curtains are what I have hanging up and they are pretty inexpensive for a single large panel. My windows are quite wide! Amazon and Target both have very affordable options depending on what style you are looking for.
Choosing the Perfect Bedroom Curtains
Curtains are a good choice when it comes to changing up your bedroom decor without blowing your budget. They have so many options for accenting your windows and they won't go out of style. Take the time to choose the perfect set of bedroom curtains for your desired overall look. You won't regret the benefits!
Happy Decorating!
