How to Strip and Refinish a Bed

Before and After, DIY & Crafts, Furniture, My Home

Furniture is EXPENSIVE. So much so, that some days I feel like I might be 100 years old before I can actually acquire the funds to get new furniture whenever I want. (Who am I kidding, I do not want to live that long!) But, that doesn’t mean I can’t update what I already have and make it better to enjoy. This is how I got started on my latest refinishing project. Let’s look at this DIY how to strip and refinish a bed… it is easier then you think!

Bed Set Before

This is our master bed that my in-laws gave it to us for our wedding. Originally it was wood with metal on it.

When I got tired of the wood and metal, I cut the metal off and painted it cream with light distressing.Painting a bed set

Since I get bored of things easily and my children so kindly picked out the paint, I decided it was time for a new color!

How about some Charcoal!  I used Sherwin Williams Peppercorn paint to achieve the perfect charcoal color. See my full bedroom reveal here.

Supplies needed

Steps for Stripping Furniture

  1. Take the piece of furniture outside in a well ventilated area.
  2. Pour a small amount of Kleen strip onto your painted piece.
  3. Spread the stripper around with a chip brush. Make sure to get it in all the small cracks and corners.
  4. Don’t let the stripper dry out – add more in areas if needed.
  5. Let the stripper sit for 15 to 20 minutes depending on how many layers of paint you have. It should bubble up.
  6. Begin stripping the large areas with a putty knife.
  7. Use a contour scraper for the smaller areas.
  8. After all the paint is stripped allow the wood to dry out.
  9. Vacuum remaining paint.
  10. Sand down lightly.
  11. Prime your piece.
  12. Paint your chosen color!

Enjoy!!
