Picking Family Costumes for 5
When it comes to picking a costume, don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Halloween is a time to embrace the stranger things of life and just have fun. Start with a theme, a favorite movie, a favorite character or person and go from there.
Consider elements such as color, patterns, accessories and makeup. For instance, if you’re opting for a more vintage or classic look, a bold pattern like polka dots and bright hues may be a great way to make a statement with your character. If you’re going for a more modern look, sleek and streamlined silhouettes in bold colors can really make a big impact.
Don’t forget that accessories such as jewelry, hats, and shoes are an easy way to finish off your look, while good makeup can make or break an outfit. Keep in mind that when it comes to coordinating costumes, the key is to have fun and be creative. Have fun experimenting with different looks and have a blast this holiday season!
Where Can I Find Family Halloween Costumes?
- Gather costume accessories around the house first
- Take a look at your local thrift store
- Check out online group garage sales
- Ask family members or raid an attic!
- Order on Amazon
- Check out a costume store (I usually save this for last because I find that the prices can be quite expensive)
Our Family of 5 Halloween Costumes
Dressing up as a family has become a fun family tradition. All year long my kids and I brainstorm for the next year's fun group costume. Here are a few of our family costumes for five over the years.
Blow Up Farm Animals
Probably not the typical costume you might wear to a Halloween party, but the great thing about this theme is that it allows for a lot of flexibility if you need to add a costume or change it up from your family costumes of five. This would be a great theme for a Halloween party too!
Wizard of OZ DIY Family Costumes
How about a turn down the yellow brick road? This was a fun year for DIY family costumes. Buying these costumes can be super expensive, so definitely DIY what you can for this theme. The only costume I bought was the lion for little buddy.
Dorothy
I made Dorothy's costume. For the dress I found fabric at JoAnn's. I gathered the skirt and then attached the front square with straps to hold it up. I found red shoes at a thrift store and sprayed them with red glitter, but you could do this with any shoes.
Wicked Witch aka Elphaba
I found a skirt and button down cardigan for the witch. We were going for the "Wicked" witch look, so I sprayed her hair black, painted her face green and topped it off with a hat!
The Scare Crow
We found pants and a sweater at the thrift store. Sew or glue patches on for the scare crow look. Top it off with straw hats and some straw coming out of your clothes and you are good to go.
Glinda the Great
Lucky for me, my mom is a great seamstress. I told her what I wanted and she whipped this dress up for me! I made the hat and star out of glittery poster board.
This was a great DIY family of 5 costume that didn't break the bank.
Mary Poppins Group Halloween Costumes
Dressing up as Mary Poppins, Burt and her penguins for Halloween is one of my all time favorite costume themes. It's not every day that you get ti finally be practically perfect in every way! My kids loved being penguins. We even dressed up the dog, but she is hiding for the picture.
I bought all of these costumes from Amazon.
- Mary Poppins costume
- Penguins costume
- Burt costume - I bought this but it didn't fit my husband. So instead I found a white coat jacket and pants and used colored duck tape for the stripes.
Family of 5 Circus Costumes
The Greatest Showman may have been our inspiration, but this year our world was truly a circus. How fitting that we chose this family costume idea for our Halloween night theme! We were living with my aunt, building a house and COVID happened. I bought all of our costumes from Spirit Halloween.
Next, I built this cage for our ferocious lion. This is a seriously fun way to involve a family pet! I used our collapsible wagon as the base and built the cage around it. What a fun addition to our costumes, and the kids used it to pull our dog door to door with them. But, it could easily house some tired kiddos too.
Addams Family Costumes for the Whole Crew
How fitting that we chose this family theme before Wednesday was all the rage. For the Addams Family, my son already had a striped shirt and my daughter had striped leggings so we just used those.
My husband had this suit and black tie, but we did have to invest in some hair! Ha. We dyed his real mustache to match his hair as well as little buddy's hair black with hair spray.
Make up was pretty easy to make all of our faces white with dark eyes. I used a white and black make up kit to apply the white all over and then added black around the eyes.
- Women's black wig
- Morticia Addams dress - I found my dress at the local thrift store.
- Gomez wig
- Gomez suit - My husband just worn one of his grey pin striped suits
- Grandmama Grey wig
- Grandmama Dress - I found this dress at a thrift store and sewed doilies onto it.
- Wednesday Addams dress
- Wednesday Addams wig
- Pugsley Addams shirt
- Make up
- Black hair spray
My kids loved dressing up as the Addams Family.
Despicable Me Family Costumes
I have to say dressing up as Despicable Me was so fun. Our kids still talk about it. It probably helps that it is one of our favorite movies too. We made it a family affair by repeating our favorite lines all night. Mine was "Lipstick taser" and of course my kids had to make annoying sounds as minions.
These costumes are some of the best Halloween costume ideas. I bought all the minions and Gru as a set for a fairly affordable option. I only had to piece together my costume for Lucy.
- Girl minion costume
- Gru costume
- Boy minion
- Lucy Costume- Coat, Scarf, Wig, Glasses
Alice in Wonderland Family of 5 Halloween Costumes
This was the first year we dressed up as a family and it was so much fun it stuck. Now my family can't avoid the perfect family Halloween costume year after year. Disney family costumes are pretty easy to plan out and you can really get creative with your costume choices.
