Celebrate the season with these fun and creative summer birthday party ideas! From outdoor games and water activities to festive décor and cool treats.
I absolutely love putting together fun, themed birthday parties for my kids. It has become one of our favorite family traditions. They love getting involved in the planning and decorating, which makes the celebration feel even more personal and meaningful. It’s such a fun way to bond, be creative together, and make lasting memories. And honestly, seeing their excitement when everything comes together is the best reward.

Planning a 14th birthday can be a lot of fun, especially when it's a pool party! With colorful decorations, playful treats, and a few creative DIY touches, we created a vibrant, festive atmosphere perfect for teens. Here’s how we pulled together a celebration full of personality, color, and sweet summer vibes.
Party Supply List
Here’s everything we used to bring this colorful celebration to life:
- Plastic tablecloths in assorted bright colors
- Rotary Cutter (for cutting strips, you can use scissors too)
- Chicken wire or garden/craft fencing
- Zip ties or Velcro (to secure the backdrop)
- Balloon garland kit (we used a bright color version from Amazon)
- 14 mylar balloon
- Skewers (for kabob candy sticks)
- Assorted gummy candies, marshmallows, and treats
- Clear plastic cups
- Nerds candy
- Sprite or lemon-lime soda
- Blue raspberry syrup or blue sports drink
- Gummy shark candy
- Mini drink umbrellas
DIY Backdrop with a Splash of Color
One of the standout decorations was a bright, colorful DIY photo backdrop. We used inexpensive plastic tablecloths in bold colors and cut them into 2-inch strips.
We used velcro to attach the metal fencing to our balloon arch frame. I used metal fencing because I had some left over in the garage. But if I was buying something. I would use the plastic fencing at Home Depot.
Then, we tied the strips onto a piece of chicken wire fencing (you can also use garden or craft fencing) to create a flowing curtain effect. It made the perfect photo op and added a burst of color behind the food table.
Balloon Garland with a Personal Twist
To tie it all together, we created a balloon garland using a kit from Amazon that matched the colors of our tablecloth backdrop.
We added a special detail—14 balloons to the other side of the garland to mark the milestone. It was simple to assemble and brought a lot of height and fun to the party space.
Sweet Treats: Kabob Candy Sticks and Snack Table
No teen party is complete without a sugar rush. We made kabob-style candy sticks using skewers and a mix of gummies and colorful treats.
Alongside those, we filled the snack table with pretzels, cupcakes, more candy. We pulled out the soft serve ice cream machine that kept everyone happy between swims. Check out some fun Ice cream bar ideas here.
Ocean-Inspired Pool Party Drinks
For drinks, we created a fun, ocean-themed mocktail that was a huge hit. Start with Nerds candy at the bottom of a clear cup.
Fill it with Sprite, then add a splash of blue raspberry flavoring or blue sports drink for a wave effect. Top it off with a gummy shark and a tiny drink umbrella for the perfect poolside sip.
