Decorating Options for Outdoor Window Wreaths
Add more festivity to your exterior windows this holiday season with some awesome ideas for using outdoor Christmas wreaths in your decorating.
Choosing a Location
Using wreaths in your decorating is an easy way to dress up your exterior that is low maintenance. You might think that displaying a festive wreath on the outside windows of your front door is the only option for hanging a wreath. Not so, my friends! When we moved into our new home, I knew I wanted to add more decor to all of the windows on the front of the house.
I ended up adding wreaths on all of the outdoor windows to our home, including the front door, main living windows and even the windows on the second story. I love it when the focal point can extend upward to the roof line for a better visual effect.
If you have a large bay window into your living room or kitchen space, dress it up with a wreath. If you have a cute balcony window that you aren't sure what to do with, add a wreath. Consider all of your window spaces for these easy Christmas decorations.
Different Types of Outdoor Wreaths
There are many different types of wreaths to put up for your outdoor holiday decor. But in my opinion, classic wreaths look the best for Christmas time. There is nothing more beautiful than natural elements of greenery and pine to remind us of the winter season.
For the outdoor window wreaths on the front windows of my house, I used a mixture of different sizes. The small traditional wreaths are 12 inches and the large ones on the front doors are 36 inches.
You can choose a holiday wreath with faux greenery or fresh, mixed greens or all pine. But if you don't love an evergreen wreath, you have a few other options that may be weather worthy in winter. A wooden or metal wreath can hold up fairly well to cold storms.
I also really love the look of ornament wreaths. They are fun for adding a splash of color and you can make them yourself. These are also easy for outdoor use and indoor. A coffee filter wreath is another one that you can make yourself, but these may not be suitable for the winter season in your area, especially if you have frigid temperatures or strong winds.
Outdoor wreaths come in countless shapes and sizes, allowing for plenty of creative expression. Wreaths with bright floral arrangements add a splash of color and life to any entrance. Iridescent wreaths made of glass, metal, or other synthetic materials create an eye-catching glimmer in the sunlight. And nothing evokes a sense of cozy nostalgia quite like a rustic grapevine wreath. Whatever you choose, these outdoor decorations are sure to be the perfect greeting for your guests.
Embellishing Outdoor Window Wreaths With Decor
Once you have picked out your wreath and decided which exterior window of your home to hang it on, it's time to add a few embellishments for a little additional holiday cheer. And don't forget, Christmas lights or the smaller fairy lights can easily be added to any wreath for extra sparkle.
Add Berries and Pine Cones
For this first example of an exterior window wreath, I used a mixture of red berry stems and pine cones. The red bells add a beautiful pop of color and tie in well with the berry filled wreaths.
Go Natural
These real wreaths are a stunning addition with a classic look and require no extra embellishments. I love the natural outdoor elements of a simple greenery wreath and pinecones. Look at how much attention is drawn to this space with the use of simple greenery cascading from floor to ceiling.
Add Red Ribbon
Another fun option is to style your wreath with beautiful red ribbons like this one. Tie this hanging ribbon at the top of your wreath for maximum effect and let the end of the ribbon dangle. You'll want to use a wider ribbon depending on the size of your wreath.
I also opted for red satin ribbon for a nicer finish. The red ribbon really pops against the black exterior of the window frame. I hang my wreaths towards the top of the window so the space is elongated.
Try a Red Bow
Don't forget that you can use red bows too. A bow is thicker material and usually wider, allowing it to fill more space within your wreath. It's all personal preference, but I like this asymmetrical version of bow placement for a unique spin on these double door exterior windows.
Style With a Word Cutout
You can also opt for heavier decor and attach a word cutout or ornament embellishments. This creates a busy visual but is no less stunning as it hangs on your exterior window.
How to Attach Your Wreath
There a few different methods for hanging your exterior wreaths, depending on the type of window or where you place it on the window. I prefer to use high quality suction cup hooks to stick them to my windows. They are a great value when you can reuse them each year.
Command strips or adhesive hooks are another option that work well, as long you install properly so it doesn't leave any traces of sticky behind on your windows. Fishing line is another option that may work, depending on how you are hanging your wreath. There are also door wreath hangers that rest at the top of the door. You can use these on a front door to hang directly over a glass window.
See which method works best for your exterior use!
