I have been wanting to make a DIY porch swing that will fit a crib mattress for our front porch since we moved in. I finally finished it and it was easier than I expected. Since I used plans from Plank and Pillow it took me about 3 hours to build.
Tools for DIY Swing Bench
- 1×2’s , 1×3’s 1×4’s and 1×6’s (plank and pillow list all wood supplies in their plans)
- 2″ Jute Rope
- 4 U brackets
- 2 ring hangers and 4″ screws (found at Lowe’s)
- Crib Mattress and Sheet
- Aged Oak gel stain
- 150 grit sandpaper
- Clear lacquer top coat
- Wood Glue
- Stainable wood filler
1- build the swing bench
2-Fill nail holes with stainable wood fill
3-Sand the DIY swing bench down with 150 grit sandpaper
4- Add U brackets to each corner of the swing. You will use these to feed the rope through.
5- find studs and use your 4″ screws to secure the rings to the ceiling.
6- Thread the jute rope through the U brackets and then up through the rings and back down again. Tighten the U brackets to hold the rope in place. Then tie a knot in the rope for more stability. I zip tied my knots as well so they won’t loosen.
7- Add your crib mattress and all the accessories.
8- ENJOY your DIY Bench Swing!
