Declutter Like a Pro for Closet Organization
A great way to declutter like a pro is to start by sorting through your clothes and accessories one category at a time. Whether it's your shoe collection, shirts, or scarves, take that first step and focus on minimizing in each category before moving on to the next. I like to do this at the beginning of every season, especially with kids closets or a coat closet.
I know this can feel overwhelming, but it's a good hack that will help you stay organized and prevent anxiety by tackling everything at once. Keep in mind the items you truly love and wear regularly, and consider donating or selling those you no longer need.
Hot Tip: If your closet is especially small, keep your clothes divided into seasons such as summer months and winter clothes. Pack away clothes that you won't need and pull them out again when the seasons change. You can do the same thing with your shoes, like your winter boots versus summer sandals.
By taking a methodical approach to decluttering, you'll be able to create a more streamlined wardrobe in no time. Now, let's dive into maximizing space with smart storage solutions in your closet system.
Maximize Space with Smart Storage Solutions
There are a lot of closet organization ideas out there, But when it comes to utilizing vertical space - using shelves, hanging organizers and stackable bins can help optimize what little space you have in your closet. Consider investing in an easy solution such as shoe racks, over-the-door storage and drawer organizers like dividers to keep small items organized and easily accessible.
I love to use these plastic bins or baskets that fit right into my custom shelving for this DIY-built walk-in closet. They are the perfect solution for easy access to your clothes, and I love that they provide plenty of space for bigger items like bulky sweaters. Baskets are a good choice for flexible storage in your shelving.
Another option for smaller items like jewellery are the sliding clear storage bins you can see above. They are essentially a small drawer insert with dividers. If you don't have a spot to hang smaller items, these are a good fit and can go on any wall. But here are a few more jewellery storage options to look at too. By strategically placing these storage solutions, you can create a more functional closet with a lot of space.
Upgrade Your Hangers and Hooks
Consider upgrading your plastic or wire hangers to slim, non-slip varieties that take up less space and keep your clothes neatly hung.
Velvet hangers are great for hanging pants as they don't allow them to fall off the hangers.
Additionally, there are pant hangers designed for space efficiency, perfect for maximizing closet space. Simply attach both ends to your clothing rod and slide your pants onto it. Once loaded, remove one of the hangers to witness the significant space saved.
Plus, have you considered a double closet rod? This is another good option for creating extra storage.
Also, another great hack is to invest in hooks that can be mounted on the back of doors or walls to hang frequently worn items like jackets or bags. You can use command hooks or try something a little more heavy duty. I love my hooks that are used for my hat wall. It almost makes me feel like I am looking at an art display!
And I absolutely love my clothing hamper because it is the ultimate space saver in my master closet. You can find them here.

Incorporate these small changes so you can create a more organized and efficient closet that maximizes every inch of space. Once you have optimized your hangers and hooks, let's turn our attention to your shoe collection.
Closet Organization to Make Your Shoe Collection Shine
- Boot holders
- Floor shoe racks
- Hanging shoe holders
- Built-in shelves - I used these in my girls closet and they work great
- Shoe bins
- Over-the-door hanging shoe rack
If your shoe collection is taking over your closet floor or scattered in disarray on shelves, it's time to make a change. Start by decluttering any pairs you no longer wear or that are past their prime. Narrow down your collection to the favorite pairs you love and wear often.
Then, invest in shoe racks, shelves, or clear plastic bins to keep them organized and easily accessible. We purposefully built lots of shoe shelves in our closet to house all the shoes to sit nicely. I was tired of all of the shoes dumped in our previous closet or left in heaps by the garage door.
I initially purchased this spinning rack for shoes, but it's been so effective for hats that we've repurposed it for them. These versatile racks are also ideal for organizing purses and other small items.
If you don't have floor space for a shoe rack, consider a hanging shelf in your closet or even a door shoe rack. By taking the time to properly store your shoes, you can create a more streamlined and visually appealing closet that reflects your personal style. When your shoe collection is in order, maintaining an organized closet can be a breeze.
Maintain Your Organized Closet
Establish a maintenance routine! Set aside a few minutes each week or each night to quickly assess your closet and put things back in their designated places. This prevents clutter from building up and helps you stay on top of keeping your space organized.
Additionally, periodically go through your clothes and accessories to reassess what you use and what can be donated or discarded. Like I mentioned before, it's easy to do this seasonally. By consistently maintaining your organized closet, you'll save time and effort in the long run.
Hot Tip: To further simplify your closet organization efforts, consider creating a capsule wardrobe or using color-coded hangers to easily identify different categories of clothing.
This helps streamline the process of getting dressed each day and finding specific items when you need them.
