In this article, we'll explore how making the right planter can transform your Christmas tree, the best way to put a tree in a planter, and how to bring it all together for a cohesive and eye-catching look. Get ready to wow your guests and create a truly unforgettable holiday display this year.
Making a Christmas Tree Base Using a Planter
While tree skirts and collars are absolutely stunning around your Christmas tree, don't neglect some easy solutions that you may already have. One of my best hacks is to use a planter container. You can find these for pretty cheap, or make use of an older planter vase in your yard.
Choosing the Right Planter Base
When it comes to choosing the right type of planter for your Christmas tree base, there are a few key factors to consider. One of the most important aspects is ensuring that your tree complements the planter in both size and style.
Things to take into account:
- The size of your tree and how wide the base is.
- Is your pot big enough for the tree?
- What style of pot do you like?
My tree is a 9' pencil tree and this pot is 19" wide x 19" tall.
When you have a seamless coordination between your tree and planter it will create a cohesive look that enhances your overall holiday decor.
How to Put a Christmas Tree in a Planter
To place a tree in a planter container, begin by making sure the planter is sturdy and stable enough to hold the tree’s weight. It's ok if your planter is a little lightweight because we can fix that with some extra support. However, you don't want something so flimsy that the tree can barely stand.
Since this pot is round, building a stand for the tree is necessary, although a bit challenging. To create the stand, I started by cutting a piece of 4x4 wood for the base. Then, I attached 2x4s to each side, which will support the top piece.
Place the wood in the bottom, just like this!
Place a layer of gravel or rocks at the bottom of the planter. I used these rocks to add weight to the planter and to also help hold the stand tight.
I added 3 layers of rocks until the pot was nice and heavy and the stand didn't move.
Next, I drilled a 1 ½" hole in the middle of a 6x1. Your measurement may be different depending on the size of your tree stem. This is what I will drop the tree down into.
To keep the tree from wiggling side to side, I screwed wood on either side of the hole-drilled platform. Extra support from both sides is never a bad option. You can also do something similar with a basket. Take a look here to see how I did it with a basket weave option.
Creating a Cohesive Look
Creating a cohesive look with your tree and planter is essential for a polished and put-together holiday display. You'll want to make sure that your tree fits well inside your planter. If you have a huge tree in a teeny planter, that will look disproportioned and odd.
Another tip for a cohesive look is to make sure that your planter reflects the style you are going for. A farmhouse style Christmas tree would look gorgeous with a metal looking pot or a woven basket.
Also make sure that all of your tree decor ties in together. You want to pick a them and stick with it so your decorations aren't clashing. This attention to detail will tie together your holiday decor and create a seamless look.
