If you’re searching for Halloween DIY ideas that are both budget-friendly and stylish, look no further! Pottery Barn’s floating witches are a huge Halloween décor trend, but you don’t need to spend a fortune to get the same spooky vibe.

With just a few simple supplies, you can make your own DIY floating witches and create a witch-inspired front porch that will wow trick-or-treaters and neighbors alike.

Floating Witches for a Spooky Front Porch

Before you begin, imagine the overall look you want for your Halloween porch décor. Do you want a few floating witches for a subtle, spooky touch, or a full coven of witches for maximum impact?

The beauty of this DIY Halloween project is that you can easily scale it up or down. Plus, it’s simple enough that you can even get the kids involved in helping, making it a fun family craft to kick off the Halloween season.

Gather Your Materials

Here’s what you’ll need for this Halloween craft DIY project:

  • Styrofoam balls (one for each witch head)
  • Black fabric (about 2 yards per witch)
  • Black glitter tulle (2 pieces, each 2 yards)
  • Fishing line
  • Hemp string or twine
  • Black felt (for the hat)
  • Scissors & hot glue gun

Build the Witch’s Body

Drill a small hole through the center of your Styrofoam ball.

Pull fishing line through the hole and tie it securely to form a loop for hanging.

Drape about 2 yards of black fabric over the ball. Cut a small hole in the fabric so the fishing line can pull through.

Add two pieces of glitter tulle the same way you added the fabric—this gives the witch a flowing, ghostly effect.

Shape the Witch

Once your fabric and tulle are in place, tie a piece of hemp string around the base of the Styrofoam ball. This defines the head and creates a spooky “body” that will move with the breeze perfect for an eerie porch display.

Craft the Witch Hat

No witch is complete without her hat! Using stiff felt, cut and glue a cone shape for the top.

Then cut a circle to form the brim and glue them together. Place the hat on top of your witch’s head and secure it with hot glue.

Hang and Style Your Witch-Inspired Porch

Use the fishing line to hang your witches from the porch ceiling, a tree branch, or even shepherd’s hooks along your walkway. They’ll appear to float in mid-air, especially at night when they catch the glow of porch lights or flickering candles.

To finish the witch-inspired front porch look, layer in more Halloween decorations like:

  • A broom propped by the door
  • Black lanterns with LED candles
  • Pumpkins stacked by the steps
  • Floating witch hats
  • Light up skeletons

The combination of floating witches and classic Halloween porch décor will make your home look straight out of Pottery Barn but for a fraction of the price.
