Change up your theme this year with an easy buffalo check plaid Christmas tree for all to enjoy.
The holiday season is upon us and it is a great time of year to decide if you want to change up your Christmas décor. It is a good idea to get a head start on modifying your Christmas tree decorations. Shop early while there is still a good selection of decoration available.
The perfect way to begin is to decide on a color scheme for this Christmas season.
Buffalo Plaid Christmas Decor Inspiration
Begin by choosing a color, pattern or item that you want to center your tree theme around. A few years back my mom decided it was time to redecorate her Christmas tree. She found red and black buffalo check home decor that she loved. It was an easy decision to use that for a buffalo check inspired Christmas tree.
This process doesn't have to be long or hard. Pick an item or color that speaks to you!
Shopping for Christmas Decorations
There are so many place to shop for Christmas decorations. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Home Goods - great deals
- Target - the designer lines
- Walmart - a big variety of single ornaments
- Decorator's Warehouse - everything Christmas you could possibly need
- Amazon - a great variety of items if you are searching for something specific
- Your home - don't forget to look here first and reuse what you can
How to Decorate the Christmas Tree
Decorating Christmas trees can sometimes be an overwhelming task. Having a theme and supplies ready will help with this. It also helps to break down your decorating into stages. Here is how to decorate a tree in 4 easy steps.
Step 1: Add Ribbon
“Ribbon is the unassuming detail that can really upscale your tree,” says professional tree decorator and florist Julia Testa.
Before the Christmas ornaments go on the tree, add the ribbon. Adding ribbon is a fun and festive way to introduce the color scheme and pattern. It also provides a softer texture and it ties everything together in the end. Post here.
Use a minimum of 2 types of ribbon with different colors, patterns and textures. In this case, the red buffalo plaid ribbon and a black and white striped ribbon. These ribbons will create a good color base and tie all the colors of the plaid pattern together.
A suggested length would be to cut your buffalo check ribbon into 24" to 36" approximately. Then begin tucking into the tree. It is much easier to get the ribbon to stay in and have a little more control over how it looks. Also make sure to tuck in the ends.
Step 2: Add Ornaments
Many ornaments work well with buffalo plaid accents. We stuck with the theme and bought mostly black, white and a few red ornaments with buffalo check decor.
Tip - Incorporate solid colors when doing a theme with a strong pattern.
With bold patterns, you have to be careful to not overdo it. Buffalo check can be overwhelming because it is such a strong palette. Incorporate a solid color to blend and balance, like with the black ornaments below.
We also added a white snowball ornament for texture and some gold glittered ornaments to give a little sparkle.
Tip - Utilize various shapes of Christmas ornaments
While round ornaments are a classy tradition typically seen on most trees, a little variety is desirable. Try to include a selection of ornaments that are different shapes. Elongated, icicle, teardrop or wreath are fun designs to choose from.
A great example are these really cute Santa boots. They add some great fluffy texture and bring a classic look to the tree. They also go well with the color scheme.
Tip - Use light colors to brighten your space
Since the tree is dark green you don't want to make all the decorations dark. Choose other colors to lighten up the palette. White ornaments were the perfect accent for this tree.
We found some fun wreaths, snowflakes and white balls. These white ornaments help fill in areas on the tree without adding a pattern that would make the tree look too busy.
And just look at how they brighten up the entire tree. That gorgeous sparkle reflects off of the ornaments and lights up the whole living room.
Tip - Add a couple handmade ornaments!
My mom made these cute DIY burlap peace ornaments with the bows. I love to add a handmade item to Christmas trees because it gives the tree a personal and unique look.
There are so many adorable DIY ideas out there. If you don't have time to make some yourself be sure to check out your local craft fairs. You may be able to find some there. This will give your tree the personal touch and a unique look that no one else will have.
Step 3: Add Dimension to a Buffalo Plaid Christmas Tree
Some great ways to create dimension to your tree is to add natural elements like branches or berries.
To break things up a bit on this tree gold glittered branches were added to poke out of the tree.
I also added some white branches with balls on them as well.
Step 4: Complete the Look
Don't forget to add some fun decorations around the tree.
The mini trees around the base are fun additions to complete the overall look of a buffalo plaid Christmas tree. This cute buffalo check throw and Believe pillow go great with the rest of the buffalo plaid Christmas decorations on the Christmas tree.
Great buffalo plaid decor ideas to add to the area around the tree would be:
- throw blanket
- wrapping paper
- gift boxes
- accent pillows
- plaid stockings
- tree skirts
- Santa
- Lanterns
This room turned out so warm and inviting! The best part though, is that my mom also loves her new holiday decor. The buffalo plaid decorations look so festive!
Take a classic pattern and turn it into something you can enjoy the entire season this holiday!
I hope these steps help you create the perfect Christmas tree in your home this year. Happy Holidays!
