How to Create Weathered Wood

Black Tea “Grey Look”

  1. Steep your tea for at least 1 1/2 days. Your tea will get darker each day you let it sit.
  2. Brush tea across wood with paintbrush and long strokes. Try not to miss any spots or it will be noticeable. If you do miss spots, another coat will be able to help cover it up.
  3. Let your wood completely dry before adding another coat, if desired.
  4. Brush apple cider vinegar across wood as the final coat, allowing it to react with the tannins in the wood and create the stained effect.

Apple Cider Vinegar “Warm Brownish-Red Look”

  1. Pour apple cider vinegar into a jar. Cut up chunks of steel wool then add it to the cider. Stir a bit, then allow to sit and react for a minimum of 10 hours. The longer it sits the darker it will become.
  2. Use a different brush to apply the apple cider vinegar so it doesn’t react to the tea.
  3. Let your wood completely dry before adding another coat, if desired.

Coffee “Darker Brown Look”

  1. Mix up your coffee and water, then allow to sit for a couple days.
  2. Brush coffee across with with long, even strokes. The coffee will be a noticeable darker stain when first applied and get darker the longer it sits.
  3. Let your wood completely dry before adding other coats to give a darker stain.
  4. Brush apple cider vinegar across the wood as the final coat, allowing it to react with the tannins in the wood and create the stained effect.
