Mine have held up to our cold and sometimes harsh Utah winters and freezing winter winds. However, it not uncommon to see boxwood blight on occasion.
There are lots of types of boxwoods. The most commonly known ones are the American boxwood, Sprinter boxwood, Green Velvet and English boxwood. The type of boxwood you buy will be determined by its intended use: border, hedge, privacy wall, etc.
In my yard, I am partial to using perennials for low-maintenance landscaping. I have the Winter Gem Asian Boxwood in my yard. It requires sun or part shade, it's hardy to -15, and grows to about 2-3 ft tall. This variety is a good hedge or works for a container plant or flower beds.
Creating Borders and Edging with Boxwood
For creating borders and edging with boxwood in your landscaping, consider using compact varieties that can be easily shaped and maintained to define the edges of flower beds, walkways, or garden paths. Green Velvet and Green Gem are both top choices for forming round, compact mounds that look beautiful along borders. If you want something even smaller for your edging, Dwarf English Boxwoods are the smallest variety.
- Variegated Boxwood: Grows 3 to 6 feet tall, likes full sun or part shade, is hardy to about -10 degrees, and is nice for a good hedge or low border.
- Green Velvet Boxwood: Likes sun or partial shade, hardy to about -15 degrees, does well in containers or a border or small hedge, has a nice green color in winter, grows 3-4 ft tall
- Dwarf English Boxwood: Grows 1-2 ft tall and wide, needs well-drained soil, great for small containers and small borders.
Boxwood's dense foliage and ability to be trimmed into precise shapes make it an ideal choice for creating clean lines and borders in your outdoor space. By planting boxwood in a row along the edge of a garden or pathway, you can create a neat and cohesive look that adds structure and definition to your yard. I just love the deep greens nestled in a line against the border of my white exterior.

The Green Tower Boxwood is one option for hedges or tall privacy walls. This beauty can grow up to 9 feet tall and is good for narrow spaces. However, keep in min that boxwood tends to have a slow growth rate, so unless you purchase it in a larger size, it might take some time for it to reach its maximum height and provide the visual interest needed.
The Dee Run Boxwood is another great choice if you want hedges with columnar shape. The Green Velvet variety is nice if you like low hedges that only reach about 3-4 feet high. They look lovely for garden borders.
Keep in mind that if you are creating a privacy wall, you don't want to have it too close to your home or home's foundation. I keep my boxwoods trimmed back just slightly from the edge of our exterior.
