Hutches are some of my favorites, such as this beautiful French hutch I found on the Close5 app. I can’t pass up anything with French legs so we hauled it home. It needed some work, but for its age it was in great shape. See how I completed this French hutch makeover below.
Are you ready for the after?
Here she is all dolled up! (don’t mine the piece of wood under the legs, our basement foundation is not level)
DIY French Hutch Makeover
I used a creamy grey latex to spray the body of this French hutch makeover and a soft aqua for the back. (These colors are both mis-tints so I don’t have paint colors)
When I am painting a hutch of this size I like to keep the body a neutral color, but I like to add color to the backdrop for a few reasons.
- It creates a great backdrop for my white dishes.
- If I get sick of the color it is easy to pop out the back and paint it a different color.
This hutch has so much detail.
- The side glass has painted lines
- The hardware is beautiful – I used DecoArts tinted wax to bring them back to life
- The details on the drawers
- The scalloped bottom
- The amazing French legs
- The details on the window frames
And I could go on, but I think you get the point.
Painting and adding glaze to the details really shows off their beauty and brings a beautiful dated piece back to life.
This was my first time using the Close5 app to purchase something and I LOVED it. It was so easy to make an offer on this piece and once the offer was accepted, pick up arrangements were made. Close5 makes it so you can buy and sell things right from your phone, which makes life much easier for me. You can download the app here:

April 13, 2016 at 2:35 pmLove how it turned out! I am always surprised how much I like it after someone paints pretty wood furniture. I spent my early childhood stripping paint off of antique furniture with my mom. So I am apprehensive to paint pretty wood. I have a small table that I have had for years. I think I will start with that and see how it comes out.
