Wow, as we are starting to pick the design elements for our new house, I am learning there is a lot that goes into designing a home! There are so many elements and you really have to know what you want in order to progress forward. The kitchen is probably one of my most favorite areas. So naturally, a little kitchen inspiration was needed as I started to design this space first. Kitchens with big islands are definitely a must for me!
Choosing a Color Scheme:
I wanted to go with a scheme that was more timeless. Instead of having to rip out backsplashes or flooring as trends change, I can just change out my accessories for a fun refresh.
Let’s Talk Islands:
Our original plans had 2 islands in the kitchen, but I decided to take those out and put in just one big island with a bar. I love having a bar in our home right now. I find it is used a lot so I wanted to make sure it could accommodate eating, making cookies, homework and more.
I really like when islands are different then the rest of the kitchen, making it feel like a design element and a piece of furniture. Right now the plan is to have a wood island that is stained grey and white quartz countertops. (I have a post coming all about countertops) I want to add some fun legs to the island or a cross on the ends for a fun element.
Inspirational Kitchens with Big Islands
And here is a collection of kitchens with big islands that have inspired my future kitchen design.
I love the wood island with the grey cupboards. And like I said before, I really like it when the island is different from the main color scheme. It makes the island really pop! (source unknown)
This island is wide enough to fit 2 chairs on both ends, in addition to having counter space. If you want more eating space, creating a larger island is a great option.
This super cute kitchen is from our friends at The Refined Farmhouse. And this white and classy farmhouse style is so gorgeous!
I love this farmhouse styled island with the large cross at the end. And, you don’t see a bench too often with islands! (source not listed)
This is one of the lengthiest islands I’ve seen from this makeover by JoAnna Gaines. If you can create a huge island that will give you a ton of storage, this is a great option to eliminate multiple cupboards.
What a fun island shared by McGee and Co. Also, I love the storage compartments built in on the side.
Instead of one big island, how about two? I love the idea of having two islands for storage and more space. And if it can work in the space for your kitchen, why not? It is especially helpful in providing more eating surfaces.
Enjoy the inspiration!
