Picking the Right Gray Paint Color

Picking the Right Gray Paint Color

My Home, Paint Colors

It is so difficult to pick the right gray paint color… but the hardest part for me is to know how it will actually look in my home! Well, I have good news. I am going to show you how to take the guess work out and get the right paint color the first time.

How to Pick the Right Gray Paint Color

First, I searched through Pinterest and blogs.

Doing this helps me to see a paint color in a room and next to white moldings.  It is always hard to tell the true color of paint from a picture.  If  you compare the molding to the wall color it can give you a good idea of the tones and how dark the paint color is.

Pick a brand and make a list.

I really like Sherwin Williams and they have a store right by my home so I searched for Sherwin Williams colors. As I found a gray paint color I thought I liked I made a list. When at Sherwin Williams, I could find the paint swatches on my list and compare them in the store.

Pick 3 colors and a color for moldings.

Gray can be tricky. You can get all different hues within gray, some leaning towards taupe, others leaning more towards white. Once I got into the store I narrowed it down to my 3 favorite gray colors:

  • Reposed Gray
  • Agreeable Gray
  • Crushed Ice
  • and one molding color – Snowbound.  I didn’t want to go bright white on my moldings but I didn’t want to be too creamy.  Snowbound was the perfect in-between color.

Buy samples and small wall

I got a sample size of each color and I also bought small walls. These are thick boards you can paint and then stick to the wall. I love this idea because it allows you to create a larger sample area of paint color that can move around to see how it looks in different light and rooms.  I cut my small walls in half so I had 4 instead of 2.

Paint and stick to the wall

I painted each small wall with 2 coats of the different paints I got and let them dry.  Once they were dry I taped them to various areas in my home to make sure I really liked the color. I also painted one with the molding color so I could see the contrast and to make sure I liked it.  Paint can appear to be different based on what it is up against.

I picked Crushed Ice and Snowbound for the moldings.

For our new home I am wanting a very light paint color on the grey side.  We are currently remodeling our master bedroom so I figured I would pick a grey color and paint my master bedroom with it to make sure I like it before I paint an entire house.

Here is what my master looks like today.  I am excited to create a calming retreat for my husband and I!
