Little Buddy’s Room: How to Maximize Space

Little Buddy’s Room: How to Maximize Space

Before and After, Decorating & Remodel, DIY & Crafts, My Home

The bedrooms in our home are not large and we don’t have a toy room anymore. So, when I was designing my little buddy’s big boy room it was very important to maximize space and get rid of anything we didn’t need. I knew I needed a space that could house all of his clothing and necessities as well as his toys and books.

How to Maximize Space in a Small Room:

Small rooms require a little bit of creative planning when it comes to organizing and storage. Furniture, bedding, window storage and decor are all items I utilized to maximize the storage space we needed.

Furniture

One of the best ways to maximize space was this loft bed from Birch Lane.  Having a raised bed like this allows for storage to be under the bed, such as the dresser drawers that are attached to the frame. Behind that curtain is an open floor space.  He loves to play under his bed, where we can stash a selection of toys or even more clothing storage.

This bed maximizes storage in every way. The stairs are even drawers!

Between the bed and the window was just a little bit of wasted space. Well, in a small room you can’t have wasted space.  When I saw this shelf my friend Ashley at Build Like A Chick built, I knew just where it would go.  Having this bookshelf here was perfect because it freed up space in his closet.  Plus it is right next to the window seat which he uses to read.  I got these darling pillows from With Lavender and Grace

Since his dresser is under his bed it opened up a little space against this wall. I found this cute metal table at Home Goods. I added baskets and crates which is a great way to separate his toys out and keep them organized.

Bedding

You may not think of bedding as a space saver, but it does make a difference!  When you reside In small quarters having extra bedding just adds to the clutter.  We went with Beddy’s bedding because it zips up which makes it so blankets are not all over the place and my little boy can make his own bed every morning. And it actually stays neat!

Get Creative With Window Storage

We have dormers along the front of our home, but when we moved they were just seats.  So one Saturday my hubby and I decided to rip one of them open to see if we could get some more storage and sure enough we could. You can see our full tutorial on how we created functional window seat storage here.

Decor

I wanted this room to be fun and functional, but also maximize space. The road signs were the perfect option because they sit flat on the wall. And I also had to design a little something special for my guy’s room, of course! You can see my  handwritten “life is a highway” sign here. As for the bumper, we turned it into a shelf (tutorial here). It was a fun addition for this room, serving the desired design and space functionality.
