Budget Friendly Ways to Decorate for Christmas

Decorating & Remodel, Holiday Decorating & Crafts

Looking for a few ways to spice up to your holiday decor without breaking the bank?  Christmas time is already expensive with gift giving, but if you are anything like me, I still want my house to feel like Christmas.  Here are a few of my tricks for budget friendly ways to decorate for Christmas!

Budget friendly tips to decorate for Christmas

Decorate for Christmas

  • Add greenery: You can never go wrong adding a flair of green to your home, whether it be real or artificial. I picked this cute little tree up for $7 at Home Depot. Using some leftover ribbon and material, I added a little decoration and this little tree combined with my boxwood wreath is the perfect touch of Christmas to our kitchen. And of course I had to add my believe cutout because I love it displayed during the holidays.

  • Add wreaths: Because wreaths are so versatile in their utility, they are one of my favorite things to display all year round. Kari from Clock Work Design added a cute bow on hers and one of our merry and bright cutouts to greet all of her visitors. We’ve updated our merry and bright with my handwriting!

Or how about an ornament wreath?  I have had this wreath for years and I still love it.  I bought these ornaments to make this wreath from the dollar store and if I remember right the entire wreath was only $10.  There are lots of way to make these wreaths – here are a few of my favorite tutorials:  Sweet Pickins and The Happier Homemaker.

Another great option is a wood wreath. Sometimes they are a little more weather worthy than green ones. I love this Joy wreath, or there is also the Merry Christmas one in my shop. Whether it be green, ornament, or wood, wreaths are always a great way to go for Christmas decorating.

  • Use decor already in your home: I confess… one of my least favorite things about having to decorate for Christmas is removing my usual decorations.  Instead of taking them all down, this year I decided to use them in my decor.  I filled this cute wire basket with cinnamon pinecones that I bought for $4!  I also added a few of my ornaments in my milk glass dish.  And if you know me, I am always looking for an excuse to have fresh flowers… so I had to add those in too!

Instead of taking all my dishes off my open shelves, I added some fresh cedar I bought at Costco for $15 and some left over ornaments.

I received these cute lanterns from a neighbor as a gift, so this year I filled it with pinecones to add some texture!

  • Add garland: This can be a garland of practically anything – food, greenery, paper, fabric, or something else. I added a book page garland. It adds so much to a tree and this garland only cost my $1.50  for the WHOLE tree.  I bought an old book at a thrift store for .50 cents and the twine was purchased at the dollar store for $1.  To make this garland I cut out triangles and then hot glued the back to the twine. Simple, easy, and effective.

I have use my book page garland for several years… and would you believe me if I told you all these ornaments came from the dollar store?  Well, they sure did, with the exception of the big red ones.  I got those on clearance after Christmas – they used to be orange.  I spray painted them red and added some glitter!
