DIY Chunky Afghan With Pom Poms

At the end of January I had hip surgery!  Which required me to be in bed for 2 weeks and on crutches for 6 week …..but I only made it to 5 weeks…I just couldn’t take it anymore.  I am a busy body, so the thought of being stuck in bed for 2 weeks straight worried me more then the surgery it’s self.  Plus at the time my baby was only 1 and had just started walking, thank heavens for family and friends who helped with my kids!  So I decided it would be a good time to start knitting again.  I had knitted in the past and I love the look of a chunky afghan.  This was the perfect DIY project for me while I was in bed.

The trick to getting a chunky looking afghan is to use 20inch needles,  (You can buy the Knitting Needles Here) and thick yarn.  This yarn is 7.97oz.  My mom and I found this yarn at Micheal’s in their clearance section …. what are the chances right?

I just did a basic knitting stitch.  This afghan is 25 stitches across and laid out it covers the entire length of our king bed. I used 7 skeins of yarn.  Even with being on bed rest to knit this chunky afghan still took me a few weeks to complete.  But it was all worth it as this afghan adds the texture I was wanting for our bed!

I had some left over yarn so I decided to put some pom poms on the edges.

Do you want to add your own pom poms to the end of a blanket?

You will need:

  1. Yarn/Pom Poms
  2. Twine
  3. scissors

First you need to make your pom poms.  You can see my pom pom tutorial here

Once you have your pom poms made you will run your twine through the center of your pom poms like this…

And then you will attach them to the edge of your blanket, tie it on with double knots and cut off the excess twine….and there you have it!  Super easy.
